the background black and the subject lit?

have a black background when you take the pic and then arrange the studio lights only on the subject, and yes they should be taken in a studio

Use a black material for your background that has no sheen, like black velvet or jersey. Then the light hitting it will be absorbed while the light hitting your subject will not. like this

By the way, this was done on a couch with an on camera strobe.
