I read somewhere that the amount of times you use the bathroom (defecate) determines if you have a faster metabolic rate. For example, somebody with a fast rate desposes of the waste (i.e. goes to the bathroom) soon after eating, while people with slower rates take longer before using the bathroom after a meal.

Any truth to this?

Waste removal is a general indicator of digestive metabolic activity. Going to the bathroom once every two days is not considered healthy or good for you. I have an unwritten rule: for every meal I eat I should go do my business within two hours.

The definition of Metabolism according to Webster.com is : "... the chemical changes in living cells by which energy is provided for vital processes and activities and new material is assimilated."

My Personal Trainers manual defines it as.."The chemical processes occurring within a living cell or organism that are necessary for the maintenance of life. In metabolism some substances are broken down to yield energy for vital processes while other substances, necessary for life, are synthesized.

SO there is a lot to metabolism and eating and digestion are only parts of it. Other parts are cell growth, heating and cooling, body repair.... basically everything that keeps you alive is metabolism.

There are metabolic tests out there. The one I am most familiar with is call New Leaf. It's kinda pricey though.

I hope that answers your question.

there are many factors that effect the time it takes to digest foods until the time of defecation. the metabolic rate would only be one of many factors.
