I have seen Christians write:
1. "The fires in California are god's punishment for gay marriage."
2. "Aids is god's punishment for homosexuals."
3. "Menopause is punishment for sin."
4. "Belief in evolution sends thousands to hell everyday."
5. "Schizophrenia is demon possession."
This is Christianity. Do you want any part of it?

I answered a question 3 minutes ago where I saw the bible used as justification to spread hate, bigotry, and ignorance.
That is Christianity!

Hey, this is NOT Christianity.
Not all Christians believe this.
Not all atheists believe that Christians are vile humans who deserve to be tortured and killed. SOME do, but not all. Not all atheists think we shoudl be ridiculed. SOME do.
You can't generalize like this, my friend.
What you listed is NOT typical of any Christian that I know.
Please don't judge us all because of those things you read on Yahoo.
No one has to pay me to go to church. I go when I want to.
MY God is loving and accepting. NO WAY does God punish people like this. This is the silliest stuff I ever heard of.
Don't believe any of it.

Christians behaving badly.
Christians (follower of Jesus) seek the kingdom of God which is not of this world. No amount of money or gold gains entrance.
Issues 1-5 have no answers from the bible. The bible does not address them, and if it did, God not man judges.
For example, evolution is a scientific theory that explains scientific facts using the scientific method. It is not reveal knowledge. Moreover, Creationism is a belief not science.
Answer: Before rejecting Christianity, why don't you try reading the Gospels (Sermon on the Mount Matt 5:1-7:29 and Sermon on the Plain Luke 6:17-49). There you will see what Jesus actually taught.
I leave you with two other passages: 1 Cor 10:23-24 and 1 Cor 13:1-13 as a reward for your question.

I used to run in that crowd - but I left in disgust when my bible study leader announced with glee (GLEE!) that God had sent a special plague to destroy the homosexuals. It was later names AIDS. I was nauseated as soon as she said it. I had been having a few issues with the discrepancies inside the text itself and some hypocrisy by church goers I knew, but this was just disgusting - I was physically ill. How could someone celebrate the suffering of anyone? How could they?
So - I would not mind physically going to the church once or twice for cold hard cash (maybe $1000 per hour of service?) because I know what goes on...but my belief is not going to be coming along.

Yes, this is Christianity, the spawn of the core of people who support it. No matter how much I hate the belief and how much I hate the existing and potential consequences of said belief, however, I never apply the stereotype of "Christian" to someone and act like it's a catch-all for everything they do and think.
Unless they REALLY piss me off by saying one of those things. Then, yeah, I toss them into the mental trash bin of "evil mother ******."
You're going to get a lot of people here insisting that this is not, in fact, Christianity. These are the people I have patience for and even call my close friends. The trouble is that they are wrong. Even if they disagree, the beliefs that they share are what fuel the people who say these things. It is Christianity that creates the bigotry and hatred that we see every day, especially here on Y!A.
EDIT: Dinger, below: You just made yourself sound SO stupid. "All of those are stupid except for the one that I agree with?"
EDIT2: The first answerer has an excellent point. American Christians aren't like Christians elsewhere. As a matter of fact, there aren't nearly as many Christians in the nicer countries of the world. Imagine that. Norway hasn't been destroyed by atheism yet.

This is fundamentalist Christianity.
Modern, Intelligent Christians don't really say things like that. Fundamnetalists in teh United States are scarcely different than their Islamic counterparts in the Middle East.
____________________________________________
No, this is not fundamentalist Christianity... none of those ridiculous quotes are a part of the fundamentals of Christianity.
C'mon people, I've talked to Democrats who tried to tell me Dubya shouldn't be allowed to run (this was the first time) because "Bush was already president before Clinton"
You can't help or hide stupid people, but you can stoop to their level by writing off their ideals because they weren't able to understand them. I for one would never dream of discounting all Democrats just because a few of them aren't able to tie their own shoes...

No, but some religious nuts out there think they are right in saying those things.. I don't go to church anymore because God has me and my family in a much different position then most churches teach ... I try going back but wont ever commit to one unless God appoints me to go and sit under somebody but he hasn't... Outside of that I feel you are right I find it so sad that we are missing the mark and turning our youngsters off! I see more and more becoming atheist then ever before.... As long as they know some truth later on they will have the chance to come back to it! God is bigger then any man .....

That isn't what Christianity is about. You unfortunately have people that want to spread hate in the name of Christianity.
I have always taken Christianity as a way to love everyone, and to help those in need. Sadly the people that you speak of give real Christians a bad name.

Well... I've seen some pretty NASTY remarks aimed at Christianity by atheists... so can I just as legitmately say to you...
THIS is ATHEISM??? Do YOU want to be any part of THAT?
I just saw some remark from an atheist regarding Jesus humping his dog, and ... um... "doing the nasty" with his mother. So THIS is atheism?
There are "exceptions" on ALL sides of the fence, m'dear!!! If YOU don't generalize, then we won't either, okay???? Sound fair enough to you?
Have a blessed day.

It would take exactly $35,000 US - the payoff on my house, and enough to cover the addition we desperately need. The church talks a lot about charity, but here I am, sleeping on the living room floor, without enough money to even consider Christmas gifts, and they only want to convert me... I'm glad I believe that I am better off this way!
Blessed Be!
