Islam had a slightly better track record in that regard but you were living as a second class citizen and could not own homes the same height as Muslims, a Muslim man could marry a Jew r Christian but not the other way around, a protection tax had to be payed and when you got too high on your high horse, your wings were quickly clipped as the Jews found out in Granada in 1066 AD.

i imagine the declare that Mohammed is a strong guy is wildly incorrect. you may ascertain from the hadith collections (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) and Sira (biographies alongside with Ibn Ishaq) that Mohammed did many undesirable issues, those tie lower back to the Koran and definitely furnish context. really he all began very peacefully and basically tried to cajole, yet then moved to Medina and were given violent. That meant looting trading caravans and killing human beings, and giving the ladies as sex slaves to his adult men, himself being given 20% in accordance to a 'revelation' from Allah. Then attacking tribes and cities, back with looting and killing and stealing. there are quite some very undesirable episodes, like the treatment of the Banu Quaraiza tribe, all of whose adult men, which includes boys basically in puberty, were given their heads chopped off at Mohammed's instructions, and the ladies and little ones were bought into slavery (the tribe made a separate settlement with attacking Meccans). Or the circumstances of Umm Qirfa, Asma Bint Marwan, Kenana or many others who were treated enormously badly. then you honestly can examine out Matthew 7:15 this is Jesus' view of such prophets. Sura 9 is the 2d very last financial ruin of the Koran written, and this is finished of hatred of the 'kufr', i.e non-muslims. He did not mellow, yet were given harsher.

Religious freedom as we know it in the modern West didnot exist in either Christendom or Islamdom.
"People of the Book",Jews and Christians ordinarily, were (at least theoretically) offered 'dhimmitude" protection if they submitted to the dominance and rule of islam with payment and certain restrictions.
In Western Christendom in particular Muslims were not really tolerated ( parts of Iberia and maybe Sicily were execeptions for a while) and Jews were often subject to great "inconveniences" and at times expulsions and mob pogroms with massacres(which happened to Christians and other religious minorities at times in Islamdom too).
If I had to choose between the two situations as a member of a religious minority in the 8th to 12th cent, I would have chosen to live in Islamdom.
However,
I much prefer real and unrestricted freedom to follow one's conscience with full public and private(moral) religious practice or not.

Islam, you could keep your religion, BUT you had to pay a tax. Still much better that losing your head, though.
