do you think that cremation should become compulsary no matter what our faith, as we are running out of land.

Yes i think your right, it takes up to much room, and cost far too much money, and sooner or later the grave becomes a mess because there is no one left to attend it

I'd agree. I used to be a funerals manager in Manchester (uk) and the largest cemetary had about ten years space left in it. It'll be a shame though as cemtaries tend to be peaceful and very interesting places. You can see how attitudes to death have changed by looking at gravestones. The Victorian gravestones were my fav. Very Gothic. Graves tend to take six coffins depending on the type of soil in the cemetary. some soils lead to a rapid decomposition whilst others preserve for a very long time. I attended a big exhumation where some of the graves were 150 years old. Coffins were still intact. Emissions from crematoriums are strictly monitored. All materials have to meet strict environmental guidlines so it is a pretty green way of disposing of a corpse. Tibetan monks have the greensest way of disposing of the dead, they cut the corpse up and let the vultures eat it. Re embalming, why ban it? It stops decomposition by killing the bacteria that cause decomp. making a body safe to handle for the funeral staff and restores a "life like" colour that can offer reassurance to grieving relatives.

I think that Mr Wonderful has missed the point about running out of land, although the worlds population is only three percent of the surface of the planet, the buildings, land for crops, land to raise animals for food, the amount of natural resources that we use and the amount of waste that we make does in fact mean that we are running out of land, people now live longer than they ever have, in many countries they are having even larger families, which of course will compound the problem, I agree that cremation must be made compulsory and the size of families must be limited otherwise in about one hundred years the problem will be so huge that there will be no way back.

I don't think you will every win this one. Personally i haven't a clue what i want, and i don't think it matters once you are gone. However my loved ones may not share that view, and they are the ones who it will make a difference to. I do think however that coffins are a waste of money and resourses. I quite like the idea of biodegradeable caskets for burials.

EDIT

They could always start doing upright burials, which take up far less room.

The only reason I agree with cremation, and have made that choice for myself, is the extremely high cost of the traditional burial.

Yes, I do

I so far have found nothing in the Bible that states we can't, except the part of defiling our Bodies....but I believe that is talking about while we are still in them.

And I hate it that funeral directors have taken peoples many Thousands of dollars for burying a body that will never ever be used again As It Is when you die.

I would like to see it be compulsary.

I think more in the realm: of DUST were you formed to dust you shall return. And ashes are a form of dust.

To tell you the truth. There is not a worry about running out of land. Did you know that if you took all the humans in the world and put them in one place they wouldn't even cover the state of Vermont. As humans we don't even cover 3% of the Earths surface.
Now I will tell you that there are a lot of people who are afrade that we are running out of land in the world, that is simply a scare tactic used to bring fear into the hearts of man. Don't worry there is plenty of ground left for us to be buried in.

No, I don't agree. We should dig deeper! I like the idea of burial, and to be 'one with the earth'. I'm prepared to pay the premium, but I would draw a line on the use of 'brown field sites', and find myself under an old factory foundation!!

No. Many are buried in old graves. What about green burials? Cremation causes global warming.. No simple answers
