Nimrod (the founder of Babylon and first deified human after the flood) hunted down the children of God, because he hated them, Shem killed Nimrod, chopped him into seven pieces and tossed them into the Nile river, Semiramis (his queen the 'queen of heaven') gathered up all of the pieces so that she could resurrect Nimrod, only she was missing one piece, his phallus, so she made one (he is still dead) that phallus symbol is the obelisk, the forerunner of the steeple. One of the popes ( I can not at this moment remember which one) had the obelisk that was in front of the temple of Ra (Nimrod) moved to the Vatican. It is pagan and has nothing to do with Christianity, any more then the catholic church is Christian (they are not, they are as pagan as pagan Rome was).

The obelisks in Rome follow an older practice of re-using columns from pagan temples. The notion conveyed is supposedly the triumph of Christianity over paganism (or so they claimed). Likely had a lot more to do with re-using beautifully carved objects.

The obelisk is a sun pillar. A symbol of sun worship (big surprise!). Steeples are exactly that as well.
Some say it's a phallic symbol as well.
Once pagan, always pagan. You can't clean those things up.

It's a symbol of God, as are all symbols of Obalisks of gods from different cultures. An Obalisk wouldn't make any sense symbolizing a goddess, after all.
