The flash has no features. It's always full power. Is there a gadget that clips on?

You can always adjust the EV output. Look this up under the FLASH UNIT section of your camera manual. But if your camera has absolutely no features, the easiest way is to put a bit of paper over the front of the flash. This will reduce it, and soften the light at the same time, preventing blown out highlights and hard edged light.

Hope this helped.

I assume this is not a built in flash ?

Most Cameras built in the last 20 years have something called a 'hot shoe' - this allows the camera to control a compatible flash gun - and (at last for most cameras) 3rd party flash guns usually cost no more than £35 ..

Try a product like StoFen--they sell them at most camera stores. It may not fit your flash though. Taping a piece of tissue paper over the flash will do wonders. Still too bright? Tape another piece. Cheap fix to your problem.

Does it pivot? If so, aim the flash 45 degrees toward the ceiling.

put a pair of tights over the flash unit - trust me it works!

Or point it upwards to the ceiling.
