Yes, it is true. There are a couple of reasons why cats do that.
1) She is young and this is her first time.
2) Sometimes there is something wrong with the kittens and the mother knows they will not survive.(Since one was stillborn... its very likely the other may have had the same problem.
3) The mom cat could have had a bad Kittenhood and was not treated well when she was young so she doesnt know what to do with her own kids Like an abused child grows up to be an abusing parent.

No, this is not true. If a mother cat doesn't feel that the kitten is strong enough to survive, or that it is sickly, she will move all of the other kittens to a new "nesting" place and will leave the sickly kitten behind. She does this so that she can concentrate on raising the kittens that she knows will be healthy and able to look after themselves. The other reason is so that the sickly kitten will not infect her healthy kittens with whatever the sick one might have. Even in the wild, cats will often leave a sickly kit(ten) behind so that her milk and energy are focused on the healthy ones.
Since kittens are dependent on their mothers to look after them for the first few weeks of their lives, it doesn't usually take to long for the sickly kitten to die.
It may seem like a cruel thing to us, but, in reality, she is doing what is best for the kits that are healthy.
I hope that this clears things up for you.

It is VERY true. It has happend to me. If the kittens are ill or born pre-mature the mother will eat them. If the mother cat knows that theres a problem with the kitten, The mother will kill it. Me and my dad have lots of experience. My cat has sick, pre-mature kittens and she ate it. But that was because it was sick and pre-mature. It is a part of there nature and nothing can change that.

Jacqueline-- You are correct. But They DO eat there kittens. My dad has had probably over 100 cats in his lifetime.

it happens, i don't know if it happens to most cats, but i had a cat once and she has 6 kitties all were 2 alike, 2 black ones, 2 orange Tabby's and 2 torties and i went in to check on her and i noticed the smallest black one was gone, i assume that's what she must have done because she never got out of that room. i was really sad about even a little mad at her at 1st but cat's know how to take care of their babies and if that's what they do then that's how it is.

Yes they do when they are very nervous when they are giving birth to their kittens. I had a cat that did that because she was very nervous and she ate one of her kittens.
