Since none of us here on Yahoo Answers know the circumstances of your friend's situation, the best thing for him to do would be to get a lawyer who can represent him.

It all depends on the circumstances of the crime. Highlight the positive aspects of his life, especially anything that shows his character to be the opposite of what happened in the crime (e.g. - if he was convicted of stealing, show that he is generous; if he was convicted of attacking someone, give examples of his restraint and kindness).
But, really, resign yourself to the fact that he has been convicted of a crime and make preparations for his going to jail. Ask at the court house if there are services available to you to help during this difficult time. Don't do anything that will make the situation any worse.

Hire an attorney.
I find it hard to believe that he's a "really good family person" considering he's a criminal. I notice you didn't ask how to word something to prove his innocence--you asked how to ask to lower his sentence.
Hire an attorney. Without one, you don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of having his sentence reduced (assuming he even deserves to have it lowered).

Work this out with his appointed lawyer, consider making a petition for community members to sign that vouche for his moral character.
