I've seen a Dutch movie and in it they used a word for idiot which I’m not familiar of- it sounded a bit like “bakalao”. Do you know what word is it?
Dank je wel!

It's a foreign word for Dutch slang language. It must come either from Portuguese "bacalao" or Italian "baccalà" (literally "stock fish").
In both languages, besides the fish's meaning, it's a slang word standing for idiot, dumb.

Edit - I'm often travelling in Holland and I've asked them the meaning when I've heard it since being Italian it sounded to me too familiar. It's not too used however.
My previous answer "dumm" was in German language . I had exchanged the word Dutch in y Q with Deutsch...!!

Well I'm Dutch and I know alot of words for idiot but non of them sound like "bakalao" or something like that.
So the first answer must be right that it's Portugese.

The Dutch words for idiot are Stom (dumb) and Klodzak (idiot, literally ball sack). Enjoy.

There is a Belgian cult series about a family called "Backeljau" that is supposed to be really stupid. Maybe they were referring to that?
