It can be done relatively cheaply if you're not into staying in 4 star hotels and doing lots of expensive activities (parasailing, swimming with dolphins, etc.). Look on www.vrbo.com for a condo or home rental -- it tends to be less expensive than staying in a hotel and you have the advantage of having a kitchen so you don't have to eat at restaurants for every meal. Spend your time hiking, sightseeing (most museums, parks, cultural spots don't cost much if anything to get in), lying on the beach. Rent snorkel equipment from Snorkel Bob's for about $10/week and snorkel where ever you want! (Don't feed the fish though, OK? We don't want them to become dependent upon humans for their food. Just look at and admire them.) Hike Diamond Head -- the view from the top is spectacular! Avoid the malls -- everything is very expensive. If you want souvenirs, go to the ABC stores or some of the little touristy shops (I'm thinking about Waikiki in particular) and price the things you want to buy. You can almost always find a good deal on things like sarongs, mac nuts, and other kitschy stuff to take home. Hawaii calendars are about a buck and you can be reminded of your trip all year long! Don't rent a car if you go to Oahu -- just take The Bus or walk.

Best bet: get a book called Oahu Revealed by Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman. It will give you lots of ideas of things to do and the prices. They also have books for Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

It's usually not expensive to travel to Hawaii, you can get some great plane fares. It's once you get there that it cost you,
for the Hotels, food and any activities you want to do. Then it will cost you an arm and leg. Hawaii is one of the most expensive states, as almost anything that is there, if not made there or grown there, has to come from the Mainlands.

Look for some bargain prices on your airline tickets and be flexible with your time line....next thing is, don't stay in a hotel. You can rent an efficieny condo for less than a thou for a month and within walking distance of Waikiki. You can have a ball for a reasonable price. Depends entirely on your prioritites!
