Christmas was always amazing when i was a kid. I loved the presents, decorations, the school plays, the music, and the community celebrations. When i was a little older my family started going on vacation for Christmas. It wasnt just my immediate family, it was all my cousins and both sets of grandparents. We would bbq on the beach on xmas. We wouldnt get many presents, but we would have each other.

Now we are all older, many of us have moved out of the area and several family members have kids; we arent able to go on vacation as much. Now we just all try to make it back to see each other and spend a few days together. My husband is in the military, we dont get home as much as we would like. It is going to be extra special. I look forward to meeting babies of counsin's i have never meet and family members coming home from war. My cousin has been deployed the better part of the last 3 years. and my sister's future husband will be deployed after the new year. As you can see this Christmas will be wonderful this year. Im chomping at the bit to be home and see family

Peoples of ancient European civilizations observed how the sun appeared to stand still in mid-winter near the southern horizon before slowly regaining height in the sky. This winter solstice (a word derived from Latin words for “sun” and “stand still”) was, according to the Julian calendar, originally dated December 25. These same people found it easy to draw an analogy between the sun and God as the Source and Sustainer of life. In 274 C.E., the Roman emperor declared Sol invictus (unconquered sun) the principal patron of the empire, and this on December 25, thus honoring Mithras, god of light.
About the emergence of Christendom as a new imperial religion, Murray writes: “After much uncertainty, victory would go to [Mithraism’s] main rival, Christianity. But around the year 300 this rival still had to be diplomatic. It was then that the church decided to create a feast for Christ’s birth (Latin: nativitas). (No such feast is included in lists of feasts from the third century, and the new feast is first recorded in a document of 336.)” What date was chosen for this celebration? December 25, the result of “a shrewd and practical decision on the part of the early church fathers,” according to the book Discovering Christmas Customs and Folklore.

Putting up the Christmas Tree and celebrating Christmas in a good Atheist kind of way.We don't have Wal mart here ,we have Woolworth's and Harvey Norman's,so its the usual yearly Christmas shopping bonanza, and boxing day sales.

12 days and nights of celebration! Starting with Mother's Night on Yule, a celebration honoring the mother goddesses and our female ancestors. It brings warmth (inside the house, anyway), family, friends and a feeling of joy.

Seeing my kids face when they open their presents and find they got exactly what they asked for is brilliant. My kids aint greedy though so its easy for me to get them what they want.
