Definitely! I think in some cases it could even be said that the person using speaker might want 'attention' of sorts. C'mon it's supposed to be a private conversation, don't let the whole restaurant hear it! (You see my point, what if the person just wanted all the nearby diners to know that they are a big cheese CEO or something like that...) So that's my answer. I honestly don't think phone conversations should be shared so openly in a restaurant.

Plus as an after thought, people who are talking with the little cellphones just in their ear freaks me out too. Just because you walk past the canned soup aisle in a store and see a person shrieking heatedly (apparently to themselves), "You always try and guilt trip me into doing things! You pick up the kids from soccer practice!!!" It was reallyyyyyyyyyy funny once I realized they were on a cell phone, call me what you will, but it freaked me out.

First of all, it's rude enough to talk on one's phone at a restaurant. But, with speaker phone? That's very inconsiderate of the people around the person talking on the phone.

People do it because there are some people who are just inconsiderate and clueless when it comes to manners in public.

If you are alone, it doesn't bother anyone else, so no. If you are with other people, answering the 'phone is always rude, wherever you are, because it says to them: "My caller is more important than you for pressing some buttons on a mobile, even though you made the effort to meet up with me". Speaker might indicate that it's a business call and the person called needs to keep his or her hands free to make notes.

Yes it's rude. Why would you want everyone around you to listen to your conversation? If you must speak on the phone, don't put it on speaker.

Yes I think it is. Speaker phone in general is a pet peeve of mine. My family ALWAYS uses it, which forces everyone around to listen to the entire conversation. At home is one thing, but in a public place? Very rude. I think it's self-centered to assume that everyone enjoying their dinner wants to hear your convo.

The height of self-absoprtion and rudeness.
unbelievable.
I was Christmas shopping yesterday - every other person I passed was talking loudly on their cellphone while at the mall...
Are we really that busy or do we hate to be alone to do errands. I must be one person who truly uses their cell phone for emergencies.

Young, ignorant people try to push social envelopes by doing stupid things like this, including playing subwoofers, which are inconsiderate, and wearing droopystoopid pants, which are just forms of exhibitionism.

as people get into their 20's, they slow down the stupidness and start to see how silly they really look.

Yes it is rude. People who do this have no manners. It is disturbing to other people paying for a meal.
