With the marital art Systema, that is basically what you are supposed to do. You express the art in your own way be it graplling, striking, whatever...

You can't re-invent the wheel. Only thing you can do is change the tread pattern and guess what?. ITS STILL A WHEEL! Basically all you do is take a few techniques from other styles give it some cool sounding name like thousands of guys have already done. And you still have the same stuff. Martial arts have been around for thousands of years. You really think you've discoverd something new thats others haven't thought of already? Ask yourself that question.

Kinda. We each have our own distinct styles of fighting. No matter what style we learn we will all inevitably fight in our own style. This is your own martial art. Such as what Bruce Lee believed in that if you fight using someone else's martial art then you can't fight well but if it is your own martial art then it is best for you based on your own strengths and weaknesses. Bruce Lee did invent his own martial art. A martial art is not equal to a move. A martial art is a style of moving ones body in a way to be able to defeat an opponent. Just because you use moves from a style before doesn't mean that it isn't your own martial arts. We choose the moves we want to use and move the way we want to move. No matter how much you try to copy someone you can't use someone else's style for yourself. However, unless you can put into words what your own style is it won't be officially accepted as a matial art. Technically it is still just your own style until you are able to teach it to others. And based on your style they create their own style. So each teacher has their own martial art in a sense. Confusing, kinda. Cause I think I just confused myself...

Of course....that's how martial arts came about in the first place. Although with the number of martial artists in the world today, and the variety of styles, there are probably few practical new ideas.

Yes, bruce lee invented 2 styles. Many martial artists take a little of what they learn all the time to make a better fighting style.

YES. It-is-done-all-the-time! Especially here in the United States.

American Jiu-Jitsu is a combination of Judo and Hakko-Ryu Jiu-jitsu (a combination I have been doing since 1968).

Another example is B.J.J. It is simple the mat work and self-defense kata's of Kodokan Judo. Nothing new or different in B.J.J.

If you flip through a 'Black Belt' magazine you will see dozens or more styles most of which are just reinventing older styles and techniques which have existed for centuries.

All styles of martial arts from Asia exist because they had something new and different to offer and had been battlefield or challenge fight tested. So how many variations on a wrist lock can one devise without duplicating something that already exists?

Of course. Without noticing, we actually create our own martial arts whenever we study one kind. We all have different styles that please us when we fight. Some people like flashy, exiting moves, others just go straight in. Others work their way around their opponant, like an art or running away sucesfully, and others like a kick to each vulnerable area. Even if you study in Kung Fu, you might be learning Kung Fu, but your really making your own style in your mind.

Many people give their styles names if there is a big enough difference between the art they studied or the one they created. Some people want to create their own art, and spend years studying the human body to find their styles and the opponant's weak points.
Bruce Lee took everything he learned in every style and transformed it into Jeet Kun Do, the way of the intercepting fist, because he saw it more effective and less effort-pulling. He found his own flaws and worked on them.
If you want to make your own style, find your personality first. Even if you study in Aikido, your own way that you want to fight means that you already have developed your own style.
