Many shelters now do that automatically when they spay or neuter them in preparation for adoption. It has helped in rehoming a lot of lost cats.

There has been some questioning about the chips causing cancer and vets have said there is not danger of that. All my cats were microchipped 16 years ago and there have been no problems.

I think it would depend on the shelter. I believe micro-chipping your pet is an excellent idea. My cats are chipped and they don't even go outside by themselves. It's preventative- the most important thing you can do for your pet.
The shelters I got my cats from do not make it mandatory- it is completely up to the adopter. I am sure they would highly recommend it though. And it is not expensive and comes with only a minimal amount of pain (like a vaccine prick).
So, most likely not mandatory.

I agree with the previous poster and want to add that, every single microchip/cancer study has been done in mice. I raise mice, and let me tell you, the cancer rate for mice is astounding. You could give a mouse cancer by the needle stick alone. You have to understand, most shelters have to KILL 75% of the cats they take in because they can't find them homes. This is almost always because the animal was lost and can't find the owner, or because some stray cat popped out another load of kittens. For the sake of reducing the sheer amount of cats killed in the shelters, chipping and altering ALL cats that go out the door is starting to spread. This is also done at low cost through most shelters.

Well, the microchip is for when your cat is lost and is found by something that can indicate who the cat belongs to. When adopting a cat from the pound they are going to get spayed or neutered. If you want the microchip that is fine, because it is permanent in the cat and it will always work instead of putting on a collar. Good luck!

I adopted my kitten from the local humane society. She already was microchipped ( it's about the size of a grain of rice ), and they also paid for her spay op. She's the most lovey-dovey kitten I have ever met. Just a delight. I have never heard any negative things regarding the microchips, and in the off chance she ever gets lost, which is highly unlikely because she's a strictly indoor cat, they will be able to determine right away who she belongs to.
