In my opinion, you should not work that extra hour that you are not getting paid for. Everyone makes mistakes. Write those things that you think you will forget on paper and take it with you. Also explain to your supervisor what the problem is and then try to do things better. Otherwise they will take advantage of you and that shouldn't happen. You said this is a new job so give it a chance and learn from those mistakes. As for right or wrong, well that is up to you. There are things in life that are definite wrongs or rights, but this isn't one of them and you know the situation better than anyone who answers your question. You have to make the choice whether it is right or wrong and live with it. I believe in God and pray to Him. Where you stand on this I will leave to you. Good Luck!

It's pretty responsible of you to work an extra hour, but I'm not sure if I would do that it I was in the same situation. I think what I would do correct the problem area because if you can fix it, it would be easier than work extra hours that you don't get paid, and you can become a better employee that way. Also, you will be able to apply your new skills to other jobs that you will have in the future. Maybe you could carry around a notebook to write down things so you don't forget it. If you can carry a cellphone, maybe you could make some notes in the notes part of the cell phone if you don't want to carry a notebook around. Otherwise, once you learn you have to to a job, go back to your desk and write a little note for yourself there. There are lots of ways to fix this little problem! And then you can be a better employee and get paid for a job well done! Good luck!

If you forget things a lot then you should start taking notes. Today, go get a notebook. Then write "Monday, December 3, 2007" that's for tomorrow because I assume you work Monday to Friday. Then write down all the things that you need to do that day. Do it every day. After you finish a task you cross it out so you know it's done. Make sure to check the list throughout the day. When your managers and/or supervisors ask you to do something, write it down. Remember, it takes more time to fix a mistake than to do it correctly from the beginning. Also, try to learn to be more organized and prioritized your work.
I don't think it's a good thing to cover up your mistakes by helping other people. You have to do your own work correctly first before helping other people.

You need to quit screwing up and do your job well for the 8 hours you are paid to do it. To stay extra won't make up for your screw ups during the work day and your "extra help" is probably seen more as a nuisance because when your shift is over you need to leave. Try to get your act together because if you don't you'll be on your way out.

Actually, you might be doing wrong working the extra hours. At least if you're in the US, your employer is legally required to pay you for the hours, even if they didn't schedule you that way, if they ALLOW you to work the extra hour. And they might not be real happy at paying you extra. I don't know what laws are if you are in another country than the US.
Maybe you need to take some notes you can refer to so you don't forget things that are important.
Good luck.

if you're screwing up when you're "helping" then you're not really a big help. staying for an extra hour does not really help them. its also a waste of your time. why don't you work hard for the hours that you get paid to work.

If you find that you forget things alot - take notes. Write little stickies for yourself if you have to. God Bless. Always write things down - one thing a college professor told me and I swear to it this day.

Wrong. It is actually illegal for them to allow you to work off the clock and not pay you.
