I lived in Sardinia for 3 1/2 years (island off the west coast of Italy). I suggest live in OFF-BASE housing if at all possible. You'll experience more of the Italian culture and enjoy your tour more that way. I was offered Navy housing, but several reasons made me turn it down. One, I was paying $89.00 a month for a fully furnished, 3 bedroom villa, overlooking Santa Teresa harbor and a 5 minute walk to a beautiful beach (I'd be giving up almost $400 a month BAH if I moved into Navy housing). Navy housing was on La Maddalena Island. I was on the main island. To get from La Mad to the main island we would have to fight the tourists for space on the ferry and depend on the weather in the fall/winter. On the main island, we could pack up and drive all over the island regardless of the time of day. There were many other reasons, also. But the best was not having daily contact with the locals. My son spoke 5 dialects (also sent him to a local kindergarten) of Italian, my wife learned Italian but spoke it with a southern American accent, and the English she taught to her Italian friends sounded like they lived in s.e. Virginia! I spoke Italian so well I often dreamed in Italian for years. My wife still keeps in LOOSE contact with a friend from down the street who she spent a lot of time with.
There are so many beautiful things to see and places to go in Italy. Don't miss a trip to Rome!
Do some internet searching now before you go.
Benvenuto a Italia!

Kadee,
Go to airforcecrossroads.com and go to the spouses forum. There you will find thousands of AF wives, many who will be more than happy to help you out! Just put out that same question, and odds are that you will end up with ladies at the base willing to help you out.
I've actually sponsored spouses through the forum and I've had other ladies sponsor me when we were moving.
Good luck and have fun!!
