Look at the position of the cat. If the cat is sitting with back arched a bit, with the nose pointed to the floor, that's a hairball, the whole position is to get something out of the stomach.
If the cat is crouched, stretched out horizontally with the chin horizontal to the floor that's a dry cough, the position is to help get something clear of the lungs.

The answers seem all good, i just wanted to add that you should try to find some literature on cats as a new cat owner. There isn't much you can do wrong if you just follow common sense but it's the small things that literature (or the internet) can help you with.
i have had cats living with me (or me living with them) for a very long time now and i wish i did read up on some things at the very beginning.

That is usually what it sounds like, especially if she's also sort of hunched over while doing it. Assuming her behavior's not changing otherwise, it sounds like hairballs. There are remedies at pet stores (including special food) if she starts leaving lots of hairballs around the house.

if its a long haired cat then it is more apt to get hair balls that actually get coughed up...most short haired cats dont cough them up as easily....but yes it could have been a hair ball....or if she ate food too fast them not drank any water she could have been semi choking on her food but dont worry my cats do it all the time.....nothing to worry about.....hope i helped...

Yeah. Sounds like hairballs.
Brush her at least twice daily, as you should if she's very fluffy, and talk to your vet.
