I often see people say that they are "not ashamed to talk about Jesus". This implies to me that some people might be ashamed. Also, I remember as a teenager in youth group, we were encouraged to not be embarrassed to talk about God, because we needed to try to witness to people and get them saved.
Why do you think people feel embarrassed to tell others about God?

FYI: I am an atheist now. So.. I no longer think I need to get anyone saved. I'm not sure I ever really believed that, anyway.

It is really not about the embarrassment of having a personal belief in God. Instead, it is the embarrassment of being attacked and vilified in front of others. Witness the examples of the Atheists and Evolutionists here on Y!A whom viciously attack believers and call them names, etc. Would you want to be treated that way to your face? I think not.
Thus, teenagers are the most susceptible to peer pressure and will generally not speak their mind until they know the one they're speaking to feels similarly. You get into a catch-22, though, because everybody ends up waiting for everybody else to speak up.
It is also not true in reverse (Atheists and Evolutionists being afraid to speak up). Why? The Atheist and the Evolutionist come from positions (see below) of an antagonist -- ready for a fight. The Believer is supposed to come from a position of humility -- ready to bow down. Note this is also where the devil tempts Believers to sin; by getting them to come from a position of an antagonist.
The main tenant of the Atheist is, "I am my own God."
The main tenant of the Evolutionist is, "Survival of the fitest."
The main tenant of the Believer is to "Love everybody."

I am not embarassed to talk about God or about my faith with anyway- sometimes I am a little shy, because I don't want to push my beliefs on people. I don't want people to think that our friendship is based on religion. Usually if I find out that someone shares my beliefs, I am very open to talking about my faith. If I am not sure, I always let them approach the subject so that I don't come across as pushy. Once I know that it is ok to discuss God and my faith, then I am open about it. I just don't want to make the other person feel uncomfortable.

In one of Pauls letters he says, "I am not ashamed of the Gospel." When I tell people this, I am repeating something that I have read in the Bible and agree with. When I say I am not ashamed, I truely mean it. As a recovering Alcoholic, I have stood up in front of people and told them that I could not have beaten Alcoholism if it weren't for the power of Jesus Christ. It's been 25 years now I have not taken a drink and all by the power, and love of our Lord, jesus Christ. No, I am not ashamed. Anyone who could remove my illness deserves high praise. There is only one Person, Jesus.

Because people are not religious anymore, mostly people have become atheists and the reason they give is that science will give all the answers meaning there is no god. So when u talk about God people think tht u are stupid and have a pre historic mind. Nonetheless i firmly believe in God. I am reading some Islamic books these days for my research and I am finding them very interesting.

Being embarrassed to talk about God as if God was a real and effective being ought to be what happens. Whether one is in the company of new friends or old, the fact that God is thoroughly a fraud doesn't change and it is only a fool who believes there is any likelihood for the likes of after-death-life, effective prayer, miracles, and the other such nonsense attached to God-belief.
LOL... of course there is reason to feel embarrassed.-- who wouldn't be embarrassed to admit they believe the nonsense of God.

I'm sure they're embarrassed because they have doubts, just like you did. I'm Wiccan, I don't scream it at everyone I meet, but I am proud of what I believe. However, a big thing for most Wiccans is silence, and that there's more than one path. Wiccans don't recruit, and if I saw someone who was claiming to be Wiccan getting in people's faces and trying to change their beliefs, I would be embarrassed for that person.

I'm not embarrassed about it at all. I think that's because I can back up everything I say, and if I can't, I don't say it.
(I've studied the Bible and Bible history extensively for about 30 years now, and I've been involved in numerous ministries, so I've been on both sides of faith--the learning and the practicing. I think that since everything Christians believe is basically good and wholesome, there is no reason whatsoever to be embarrassed. Rather, we should be anxious to share.)

I wish I could equate it with my alcoholism, but I can't. Usually those who say they're "not ashamed to talk about Jesus" are doing it from the safety of the crowd or are nuts. The majority of Christians are respectful of others and don't feel a need to preach nonstop, showing they're secure in their faith.
If someone starts hinting to me they're having problems with drink or drugs, circling me, I'll gently try to help them, but no preaching. I just remember what I was like and know I am in no position to judge persons suffering from addictions.

This is a good question and one I have asked many people about who profess to be Christians. These are some of the reasons that I have been told from various people.
1. They feel inadequate because of a lack of biblical knowledge.
2. They are insecure within themselves about their own salvation.
3. They are afraid of being challenged by others.
4. They do not want to be laughed at and ridiculed.
5. Because they do not live like a Christian.
6. They do not feel they have had enough real experience with Christ to talk about Him with others.
7. They do not want to be ostracized from their friends and family.
8. They say it is the job of the preachers and the church to talk to people about God.
9. They think that only certain gifted people are suppose to do it.
10. They say they are too shy and don't feel comfortable talking to people about God because people ask too many questions.

you weren't embarrassed because you didn't have any faith to start with, you only quoted what you were told and didn't have a personal relationship with Christ, otherwise you wouldn't have become an atheist, some are embarrassed because they don't have all the answers, and that's OK even the disciples prayed for boldness , and someones eternity is important why did you deny GOD? check this out...http://youtube.com/watch?v=-wh_h2ScwDk
