You didn't win the lottery. You are entitled to be compensated for your loss however. What is your insurance company telling you? They should be the ones contacting the other insurance on your behalf, and would be the best source of information regarding fair compensation.

If you take others advice and hire an attorney, you will still only be fairly compensated, but now the attorney will take around a third of what you get as his fee.

If it's been almost a year, it would seem someone has already compensated you, or at the very least should be offering to settle.

You are entitled to fair compensation. This does not mean you can write your own check for whatever amount you want. It seems as though people feel that they should be paid so much they won't ever have to work another day after an event like this. You should receive enough to pay the actual damages and medical bills plus a reasonable amount for "pain and suffering". Reasonable....not exorbitant.

Sounds like you're entitled a settlement.
You should get all your medical expenses,
lost wages, legal fees, etc., plus compensation
for your lasting injury.
You need a lawyer.
Beware of those guys who want to take a percentage of the
award instead of a fee.
You've got a good case, unless theres something you're not telling us.
