I got my male pug several months ago. His previous owners had not neutered him, and had in fact rented him to breeders in order to sire often.

Is it too late to neuter him? (I'm also concerned about him going under anaesthesia since I know pugs sometimes can have complications due to their short noses.)

Not too late all at. We just neutered an 11 year old German Shepherd on Friday. In my opinion, if the dog is healthy, then there is no such thing as "too old" to be neutered. Which brings me to my next point. I would highly recommend that you have your vet run a Pre-Anesthetic Mini Screening (blood panel) due to his age to ensure his values (specifically the kidneys and liver) are within normal limits to handle the anesthetic. Good luck!

No he's not too old. I had a 6 year old rescued pug spayed and that's quite a bit more complicated than a neuter. Apparently there is a blood test you can get done to see if he can go under anaesthesia though - ask your vet about this.

NO - it is never too late to have a pet spayed or neutered, as long as they are not elderly, sickly, and are still in good general health!

Regarding anesthesia, there is pre-surgical testing that your veterinarian will always recommend ANY time your pet goes in for surgery. ALWAYS say YES to this testing, because it is a good predictor of any potential problems or issues that may arise while your pug is under anesthesia. This blood testing is also a good predictor of any other potential health problems that your pug might have developed since the last testing.

This pre-op blood testing is usually only around $75-85, but it is well worth the extra money when you consider it is for your beloved pet.

BTW - do not listen to "Country Cutie" - she has NO idea what she is talking about! :)

For years old isn't very old at all especially for a small dog. Normally you won't run into old age problems with anaesthesia until the dog is 10 or so. The real problem is normally from unknown health issues such as liver disease. It wouldn't hurt to have you vet do a pre-surgery blood panel to make sure everything is in the normal range. Also make sure that your vet has experience with short nosed breeds and is aware of their special issues.

Nope that is a relatively young age for a Pug to go into a surgery and the neutering is a relatively simple surgery if both testicles are descended as they don't even have to pass a muscular sheath to remove the testicles. Find a vet that feels confident in the use of anesthesia in brachialcephalic breeds like Pugs and it shouldn't be a problem at all. Good luck and thanks for being responsible for your dog :)

As has been said many times already, no, it's definitely not too late to neuter him. As for the anesthesia part of it, I'd ask questions....talk to your vet....find out if they use injectable anesthesia or gas, find out how many little guys such as your dog they've done...basically get their experience level. If you're not comfortable, or they give you any doubts, look around and find someone else to do it.

Nope, I would go for it if i were you. I wish I had fixed my dog because that could have prevented him from getting in a dog fight and getting killed. So if your dog is aggressive and you want to keep him out of trouble from other dogs, then by all means take my advice and neuter him. I think I could have prevented my dog from getting killed if I had gotten him neutered.

No, until smaller dogs reach ten years or more, because they can live up to 20 years, it is not to late too nuter him. Talk to your vet before hand and have them adress any concerns you have. A good vet will be happy to answer any questions you have.
