Barring a very few! I certainly don't agree that teachers think they are better than everyone else! I think we should be grateful to our teachers for the rest of our lives!!!

Everyone deserves respect. When I was in high school I gave the 6 year olds on the bus I monitored respect. I enforced the rules, but I was respectful. I respected my teachers and they respected me. If I challenged them n the accuracy of a point, they checked their facts and answered me. If I asked a question, they found out what the answer was if they didn't already know it. Respect isn't just a two way street, everyone deserves respect, from my two year old nephew, to my grandma, who is a teacher.

I have enjoyed reading some of the responses to this question. As I myself am a teacher, I had to respond. Before I was a teacher, I didnt realize the trials and tribulations that these individuals--teachers--go through in their work lives everyday. Alot of hard work and dedication goes into being a teacher; you cant work the job and not love it.
Why would I get up every morning and deal with kids being disrespectful, parents talking down to me as if I'm a business person whose services they are paying for, and supervisors telling me how they want me to do my job??? I do it because I love working with children, because I love to learn and share my knowledge with others, and because I hope that I can change the lives of at least the few of many young faces I see every day for the school year.
Do I get respect as a teacher? Often times not--unfortunately in today's society, teachers are not held in the high regard they should be, yet everyone blames them for something that has happened in the child's development during their years in school. I cannot tell you how many times I have to deal with children who simply do not want to focus in class and disrupt the class, yet when I contact home the behavior of the child doesnt change. I cannot tell you the countless times I've had parents come in to complain because their child didnt get a higher grade on a test than they shouldve--its my fault they didnt study, right??
As a child, I always showed respect towards my elders. As an adult, I still show respect to anyone who is an authority, who is my elder, and who wants to earn my respect. I tell my students "Treat others the way you want to be treated." Some of them remember this statement, others dont. I've given kids "a break" when they screw up because to err is to be human; to stumble is to learn. But, if you dont stop the behavior, you dont get the respect--i.e. Now I have to give you a detention or call home or whatever the disciplinary action has to be. And I will no longer give you "a break" anymore, but I will still say "Thank you", and "Please, will you" and treat them fair academically as I would any other child who hasnt made those mistakes.
So, I dont think teachers are better than everyone else because they put up with alot of crap that a child would not even understand because developmentally children are not engaged with the responsibilities of society yet. Respect your parents, your friends, your teachers and other leaders or any adult; they can teach you many things about life and guide you down the best path. Most importantly, live up to your values, ethics, and moral code. Treat others the way you want to be treated and most often you will receive respect that is well deserved.

You will find this type of person in every walk of life, not just in the teaching profession. Most teachers are hard-working, dedicated, intelligent individuals that care deeply about what they are doing and about the children and teenagers they work with. Yes, there are a few that set themselves (in their own minds) above the masses, and some of these become administrators and superintendents and make life uncomfortable or miserable for the rest, but they are in the minority.
Don't confuse healthy self-confidence for self-importance. Always remember that good teachers tend to gather a great deal of knowledge and understanding during their own education as well as during their years in the classroom, and they probably know a lot more than you do in certain areas. That doesn't equate to them thinking they're better than you.
If you can read, thank a teacher. If you can do math, thank a teacher. If you know how to learn, thank a teacher. If you can communicate effectively in both speech and writing, thank a teacher. If you can solve problems in your life, thank a teacher. If you can work well with others, thank a teacher. (The "teacher", of course, could also be a parent or another adult.)

Maybe because they ARE?
M'dear... YOU, as a STUDENT, and a "youngun" should automatically be respecting your "elders" simply because they ARE your ELDERS! These people should automatically earn our respect. I respect those older than I... they've automatically earned it by living to their ages, knowing more than I, and coping with whatever life has tossed their way to this point in time.
Respect is NOT ALWAYS a two-way street. Do you really think you have done ANYTHING in your young life to "earn" an elder's respect? M'dear... they would laugh at you in a loving sort of way... "What is this little toady expect?"
To make this point even more... you ought to read the Bible book of Job... no... READ it, not just say, "oh, I know that story." Job was a "righteous and upright" person in God's eyes, and throughout the years he was being "persecuted" by Satan, he never once blamed God for his sufferings, as Job's wife and friends TOLD him to! But Job was still bewildered as to why he was suffering so... and he asked God, WHY am I suffering? WHY is this happening... and so on. God finally answered him, "Where were you when I created the universe?" In other words, "WHO do you think you are to question Me?" That might sound a bit selfish of God, but it was a matter of respect. God was just reminding Job of Job's "place" and of God's "place," and the Job should respect God, God needn't respect Him. Job did understand immediately and apologized, realizing that Job was merely God's creation, and he'd better start respecting God for that.
So, instead of sitting there "demanding" respect FROM OTHERS, how about showing some RESPECT FOR others FIRST? Let them prove that they deserved your respect, or disprove it. But DEMANDING that others respect YOU is a little back-asswards!
Have a polite day.

Teachers think they are better than everyone else because, to them, students are sheep, and they are the guard dog. they areon a power trip, that takes them beyond exctasy, and makes there students hate them. The only way to have a good relationship with a teacher, is if the teacher is smart enough to not be an ***, and bring them to a common people level.

It's like being with a little kid. Wouldn't you think that you're better than them too? Teachers are better than us though, but all the same, they should respect us.

Well I am a little bit appalled by this comment. I am a teacher and I don't think I am better than anyone else. Who are you to say such a thing?
