Christianity and hence theists in general have a strong majority in the US. Add to that all the Abrahamic religions disparaging non-believers, a good portion of US society thinks non-believers are inherently immoral. This makes it difficult in some cases to be public about one's atheism.
It very difficult to be open in many jobs, especially ones that deal with the public. Most strongly seen in politics.
I also think that one of the biggest reasons people believe is because other people believe. People publicly disagreeing throws a monkey wrench in that, so believers attack non-believers. Atheists who file lawsuits to stop unconstitutional support of religion commonly have death threats. Micheal Newdow, Margaret Downey and others have all received death threats for their legal actions. The US soldier Jeremy Hall was threatened with fragging (being murdered by your own soldiers) when he brought a suit for equal treatment.
(Note the difference. Atheists bring their differences to court, Christians threaten violence)
I know people who have been kicked out of apartments, fired from their jobs when their atheism has been exposed.

For Jeancommunicates:
This nation is not a Christian nation. It is a secular nation which happens to have a Christian majority. If the founders wanted a Christian nation, they could have easily put references to Jesus Christ in the US constitution. Instead, there is no reference to JC or god in the constitution. What we have is a preamble that says:
We the People ... do ordain and establish this constitution.
No god mentioned.

I drove through Ohio last spring from end to end, and indeed saw several billboards of the type mentioned.
Religion should be a personal choice, but unfortunately in the USA there are those who think that their personal choice should be EVERYONE's personal choice.

Because, the majority of America is Christian and arrogant and we're very defensive. We have a horrible history of religious prosecution. Don't believe the propaganda the US sends out. Our Constitution gives us the rights to be whatever we want. But let it out that your not Christian and the whole country is against you! Mostly if your in a rual area like I am.

Because this is a Christian nation and our freedom and lifestyle is based on Christian beliefs. Some of our forefathers came to America so they could worship our Christian God as they saw fit. For this reason we have many denominations for the Christian religion, but they all have fundamental beliefs about Jesus Christ that cannot be changed if you call yourself Christian. One thing our forefathers knew is that God said, "whom Christ sets free is free indeed." They also knew that all men are created equal and that God is no respector of persons.
False religions are allowed in our Christian nation, but at what moment those religions would attempt to take over the government, I strongly believe there would be great trouble.
To change the Christian people, will change the country. Without God this nation will not stand. She is dividing at the moment and even that division is causing great stress on this nation. Without God, freedom and America as people know it
will drastically change. God lets us live like kings and queens because we are His children. God is our protection and our provision.

i don't really know. you would think people would just let others believe what they want without all the crap we have to put up with sometimes.
i live in ohio, and i have seen billboards asking "got god?". i'm sure my state isn't the only one to do that.
i certainly don't go around asking people about their religion, but when people do talk about it they assume that everyone they're talking to is christian.
bright blessings to you

Because this country has such a huge disconnect between its official morality, what a lot of people think that people should do, and its real morality, what people actually do. Religion thrives in that environment of hypocrisy.

The way it is there is the way it should be here. Religion should be a personal choice and nothing more. It should not be part of politics and government either (and isn't "supposed" to, but is).

Um, because so many people believe in God.
It's a VERY big deal when people start harassing me and expecting me to believe in the same fairy tales they do.
It probably isn't a big deal in all parts of the country, but here in Ohio, you can't go a single block in any direction without seeing some billboard advertising for how great God is.
Homeowner, I blocked you because you called me a liar. I don't appreciate it. I am NOT a liar, however. I am quite serious. It's annoying.
edit2: Thank you for validating my statement, sherl. And that you too Tig!

This is a predominately Christian nation.
Christianity is based on hate and judgment. It is not like it matters if you believe because Christians attack everyone, even each other.
