i am 4 foot 10 and i used to play. not a problem at all. heavy though.

If the double bass is too tall for you to play properly, get a stool to stand on. I believe there is only one size of double bass, but i could be wrong.

I used to play bass, I was about 5'3 at the time. I hated it though because I am more of a guitar guy. So I sold the bass

Nope, they come in a variety of scales, Full Scale might be too big and heavy for you though,

You don't need to be, but it does help.
A lot of upright basses are 3/4 size, and you can easily get one.
Large hands and good finger stretch helps too.

I seen a little gal,probably only about 10 years old play one at a Blue Grass Festival,and she didn't miss a lick!
