Because my wife would have a fit if I tried to park a tank in the driveway. (And I couldn't afford the fuel for it anyway.)

The weapon is the property of the us military. When you need it, you will be issued one. When you are done you return it. If every veteran returned home with his duty rifle, just imagine how fast the military would go broke trying to replace all of them. And they dont give you a handgun to keep either, that was an old practice that was discontinued 40 years ago. Before modern accountability practices, many soldiers coming home from war would find a way to smuggle their rifles home, and that is the only way they left military ownership.

The US Military weapons and everything else connected to weapons and their operating systems are the sole property of the US Government. The weapons are automatic and are ILLEGAL in the hands of civilians.

Because they are government property and because most people don't have permits to own fully automatic weapons. I own a couple of M1s and a 1911 pistol but they were sold by the government as surplus once they were deemed to be obsolete. I doubt the government will ever sell old M16s as surplus.

what if someone went iraqi on the unit and shot everyone, the M16 can be fired as a machine gun. Actually during deployments, the soldiers sleep next to their weapons, in the field the soldiers sleep with their weapons in their sleeping bag, at least I remember asleeping with my COLD weapons in my sleeping bag, lest my PLT SGT, take it during the night and I get in trouble for loosing my weapon during an FTX (army camping or feild trainign exercise). If the deployed soldier is in the sands of Iraq,(tent city) they are very close to their weapons, if they were like I was in Kuwait, on a base, then the weapons were locked up for safe keeping, I slept in a warehouse.

Because when you get out they give it to someone else to use without having to buy new weapons, could you imagine what taxes would be like if they let us keep our weapons?

Because they are expensive and they need it for the next solder on the beat. What the hell do you need a gun for anyway?
