As the name implies, biliverdin is a green pigment. It has two major sources, first as a breakdown product of heme in the red blood cell, and second, it is present in the bile, and imparts a green color to it. Ordinarily we don't note the contents of the small intestine, but if one does, say perhaps during surgery for a gunshot wound, you would see that those contents are green.

Bacterial action in the large intestine changes the green color to brown, hence the normal color of our stools. But if the intestinal transit time is rapid, say with diarrhea, or if we ingest certain antibiotics that decrease the bacterial population of our colon, our stools may be green.
