sewing thread may not be strong enough especially considering there is a wick in the center. also, you want to cut from the top because at the bottom there usually is a piece of metal that holds the wick into place. when i have faced this dilemma, i search through my husbands tool box for a bit of wire made for cutting through PVC pipe. picture hanging wire may work in a pinch. to clean the edges after you are done, brush the wax then soak it for a moment in HOT water. good luck!

Mount the candle on something that will hold it still (or you can try laying it down) and cut with a piece of sewing thread. It won't cut the wick so you will need to cut around it, pull the 2" piece off and then trim the wick. A cheese cutter may also work. With it, you could apply a little heat to the wire to make it cut easier.

option 1, get a big heavy knife, heat it red hot, and slice right through. its got to be heavy otherwise it may cool down in the middle of the process.
option 2, get a fine-toothed saw, carefully saw through, then smoothen the bottom on a hot plate.
heres another option, if you can get a wire saw, loop it around the candle and saw right through. easier to get a straight cut

Unless you have a table saw you will have to use a hack saw with a metal fine tooth blade
