If you want them out of your kitchen, you need to move your snacks and drinks to a table or server in another room, along with yourself. If you're the host/hostess, they'll congregate where you are. I've had the same problem, and found moving everything into the living room and staying there solves it.

A lot of people use their kitchen as the "gathering place". In our family, that's where everyone relaxes and congregates. People who do that at a party feel more comfortable there as it's the most informal place to be. Of course that's where the food and drinks are so that's a reason, too.

Food brings people together. Therefore, the kitchen would be one of the most sociable places in the house.
Food can also be used as a tool to help social anxiety.

At my friends house, the kitchen is better lit than the living room. There is also room for us to walk around and mingle compared to the rest of the house (Its a small one)

You don't want to get crumbs all over the nice carpet and sofa. :) At least should spills and crumbs occur in the kitchen, clean up should be easy.
