Global warming and cooling occur naturally but the current accelerating bout of warming has been brought about by human generated emissions of extra CO2, particularly from the burning of fossil fuels. The waste of resources that has given rise to the problem is also creating another problem that will hit us hard quite soon; that is a shortage of resources that could have enormously damaging social and economic consequences, on top of those caused by global warming.

The answer is therefore obvious; we must curtail the activities that are adding extra CO2 to the atmosphere.

Individuals can contribute to the effort by walking and pedalling whenever possible and by taking public transport when necessary. Switching things off and using low energy light bulbs helps as does adopting a simpler lifestyle uncluttered by the unnecessary stuff we are encouraged to buy nowadays. All of these things require fossil resources and energy for their manufacture, distribution and disposal.

Next we need to re-use things rather than throw them away. This can involve repairing things rather than replacing them and can also involve buying and selling second-hand things.

Finally we need to recycle what can not be re-used.

This can all be summarised as Reduce, Re-use and Recycle and will help achieve a cleaner and better resourced world for ourselves and future generations. It will also demonstrate to the politicians that there are votes in adopting sensible sustainable policies. Better still the more active and simpler lifestyle is far more enjoyable than trying to keep up with the neighbours.

Best wishes

The best thing we can do is stop politicizing it. The way things are right now we can't be sure of what is true and what isn't. Historically the planet changes. It goes through cycles caused by changes in the solar output. Many of the claims made seem to be far out, fabrications trying to scare people or get funding for a project someone wants to do. The historical facts do not seem to support any reason for panic at this point. There have been times in recorded history when grapes grew in England, meaning it was much warmer with fewer people, who used much more polluting methods such as slash and burn agriculture and heated with coal and wood exclusively. The climate models in use today are weak at best and can't seem to predict the weather a year in advance much less decades but they have gotten a lot of attention and are quoted as gospel to the public.

As individuals, not a lot. Most greenhouse gases are from animal origins. We could stop breathing, but then we'd die and our bodies would give off methane.

Using less energy would help, but it won't solve the problem. The only way to reverse global warming would be to capture the carbon gases in the atmosphere. Trees do this rather well - what's more they are solar powered and the carbon is stored as timber which we can use for other purposes (provided we don't burn it or rot it and release the carbon again).

3,000 years ago, roughly 3 times as much of the Earth's surface was covered in trees. Man, in his wisdom has systematically cut them down to make way for agriculture and cities. Much of this effort was wasted because the land then became desert.

For the cost of America's recent adventures in the Middle East, we could have returned a substantial amount of unused land to forest. A problem with democracy is that there are more votes in bombs than there are in trees.

most people say its a cycle, and some say its caused by humans
i would think its a little bit of both though
yes maybe the world is supposed to be getting hotter, but also its getting hotter faster because of all this pollution and humans
theres nothing you can really do because it would take years to have the whole world be green but what i do is:
ride my bike/ walk to places instead of driving ( if its close by)
unplugg your computer and everything in your house while your not using it
turn off all your lights as much as possible
when you brush your teeth dont let the water keep running
take shorter showers
recycle a lot
and buy fluroecent lightbulbs
oooh also when grocery shopping buy a recycled tote and dont use plastic bags!! just bring ayour own tote for them to put your stuff in and just bring the tote each time!
stay green people!

Global warming is a lie. Pollution is a big problem on a more localised scale though. You can reduce pollution by making sure you turn off electrical appliances when you are not using them (i.e. Don't leave TVs and computers on standby, this will save you money too.)
Try not to buy things you don't really need. Is there really any need for newspapers and magazines in this day and age of television and the Internet? (Not buying papers and magazines reduces pollution caused by the manufacturing of them. And believe it or not, recycling newspapers adds to pollution too, think of the vehicles used to collect them etc. This will also save you money.)
Make sure that you do recycle the things you buy though, it's better to recycle than to throw away.
Also, try not to drive everywhere. Use public transport, or even better, walk, or cycle to work if you can. (This is also good for your health and saves you money as well.)

Look at your food miles
Go on holiday by land or sea
Turn off the heaters/aircon more often
Catch a bus to work instead of driving
Use a water filter instead of buying bottled water
Try and get your employers to take it seriously (I think tons more energy is wasted by companies than by individuals)
If you must drive, keep your car in good condition so it runs efficiently

People can stop denying it for a start.Thats one of the reasons that people will do nothing about it.They deny it even exists because the cant see the problem.I think it does exist and ive already made changes, just smalll changes but its better than nothing.

If people stopped polluting the atmosphere with carbon dioxide then the problem will b helped ALLOT.

Start by getting people to use their legs, not their cars, and ban large vehicles for small families. These people just want prestige and don't give a damn about pollution. We need a government that acts on these issues urgently, and stops farting around.

We can all slow it down, by not driving cars, and stopping all industry, that creates environmental pollution. We can start living in caves, and raising and slaughtering our own animals, growing our own vegetables, and weaving our own cloth. In short start living like an Arab, in a tent in the desert.
