The Hindu religion is vast and very old. It is the most tolerant of other beliefs and religions, believing that every idea, every belief, is true and is part of an infinite whole. It's not even really a religion according to Western ideology, but a culture. But in the east, religion, culture, and medicine are intertwined.

Historically Hinduism came about around 4500 years ago when the Indus valley was invaded by Persia. Not much is known about the people before that. Around the same era, the Vedas were written which are the sacred texts of Hinduism. They refer to many of the ideas and Gods brought by the Persians. Sometime later they were annexed by the Upanishads, which deal less with the Gods and more with behaviors, morals, kindess, etc.

The basic Gods of Brahmanism (pre-Upanishad Hinduism) are Brahma the creator who is rarely dealth with; Shiva the god of creation and death, also god of the dance and fertility and Vishnu, a benevolent god who is also somewhat of a pranskter. They each had their female counterparts.

This should be enough to get you started on some research as it is most interesting and Hinduism is considered the "Mother of all Religion" (formation and development of religion, not of all other beliefs and Gods.)

And how do you know that Hinduism is not a uniting belief system? Is it possible that their way of unity is different from the other religions?

Your understanding of the Hindu Religion is Not correct.. Hindus believe in ONE and ONLY ONE--Omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, all pervasive.immanent, all imbibisive,Ultimate Reality called "Brahmam"---Hindu Religion gives "Freedom" to devotees to call the Nameless(Anomica),Formless(Aroopam) "Brahmam" ---which can be perceived and understood only by a few persons of High Intelligence(VIPRA)--- for the of persons of common Intelligence(Bahudhaa) to peceive a nameless and formless GOD is difficult. Those devotees can select a God with a Name(Naamam) and Form (Roopam or Tanum) from a list of selected Names and Forms ,based on the attributes of GOD.----Sri.SIVA=Benevolent----sri.Vishnu=(derived from Vaasyam) Immanent---Brahma= of Creative Intelligence. They are not different GODS but different NAMES for ONE and ONLY ONE GOD.
