A check bag is a bag that you want to go to the Airplane cargo space that you check-in when you get your tickets. For domestic economy class, you are allowed up to (2) 50 pounds maximum. Then you are allowed a hand carry where you put your important stuff, this is the bag you take inside the passenger area with you. It should have your important documents and other valuable stuff (i.e. IPOD, Laptop). If you are taking some liquids, make sure you place it in your check-in bags so it won't go and be checked by TSA and get thrown out. The check bag is the bag that you go pick up in the baggage carousel when you arrive at your destination.

The "checked" bag is the bag that goes in the cargo area of the plane - it is not in your possession and may get lost or go to a wrong destination. You should carry your documents with you on the plane.

The bag that you check in to put in the back of the plane. Never check in. Just carry two bags that will fit in the upper compartment. It is a nightmare with getting your luggage back. Not to mention, sometimes the airline loses it.

If you booked the tickets together as a single itinerary, you should be able to check your luggage all the way through. However, if you booked any leg of your flight separately (the first plane,) then you'll have to pick up your bag and recheck ... and repay any baggage fees.
