Given that the question is in the Global Warming section, I would have thought that CO2 emissions and the resultant global warming was implicit.

I totally agree, these lights are a drain on the electrical system causing GHG emissions when they are on and cause unnecessary damage to the environment in their production. It may not seem to be a big deal if one looks at it per household, but when you total all the lights being lite every night for weeks on end across the North American continent, the damage really adds up. For what? So that there is a bunch of coloured lite around the eves trough promoting needless commercialism?

The generators still run 24/7 whether your christmas lights are up or not, no real impact on the environment other than from their manufacture. New LED christmas lights produce more light for a fraction of the energy costs, but even if everyone switched to LED, you would not see a noticeable difference in electrical production and its accompanying fossil fuel waste. Plus if you live where nuclear or hydro is the source, there is no increase in pollutants.

I like the lights at Christmas (though I sometimes thinks it's too much). To me I think they are important to lighten up the dark December now since we almost never have any white Christmas anymore, but I understand and agree with your point.

I would like to encourage everyone to use LED-lights instead of ordinary lights. They are much more energy efficient and they also saves your economy in the long run.

It is a drop in the bucket. No worse than Al Gore flying around the country in a private jet that to tell other people to not fly or even drive, to reduce pollution.
