It's not nearly as overdue as ending citizenship by birth.

I don't think being married to a citizen should mean automatic citizenship but I do think it should make that individuals citizenship a higher priority than others. I have a friend who has spent the last 2 years working in London & fell in love to a wonderful woman over there and now they want to return to the U.S. to live & right now she's an illegal immigrant because she's living here without documentation. She's just simply trying to start a life with the man she loves & I don't think the U.S. government should make it any harder on couples like these than it already is. I don't think it's time to end the "citizenship by marriage" law. You have to go through endless measures to prove your marriage is legit and true before they even consider granting citizenship so it's not as easy as some would have you believe.

There is no "citizenship by marriage" one thing is to be married and another to migrate here. Proof is you can marry someone and if you enetered the country illegaly and you marry you stay illegal. After you marry all you get is a conditional permanent resident card which you have to petition for removal of conditional status, after that you get a permanent resident card (greencard) which you have to renew every ten years. Through all this as a non-citizen you are deportable. One becomes a citizen only if they want to and for that there's a process and you have to present proof and evidence of many things before they actually grant you citizenship, which officials may choose after all not to do. Therefore there's no automatic citizenship by marriage. In my case I decided not to become a citizen until much later, given I had the right to PETITION for it after three years of being married I didn't do it until after 7. Once I petitioned I was granted it in 6 months. Had I stayed a permanent resident they could have deported me at any time or I could have become illegal if they did not renew my green card or if I let it expire thus becoming deportable. As much as there are marriages in which people only look for the green card. There are many more legitimate marriages. I've been married for 8 years already and we have a house, a business, good jobs, etc.not to mention we love each other. Government shouldn't have a say on who you can marry. Not too long ago it was illegal for a white person to marry a black person, should we bring that back too?
P.S. Children of these marriages derive citizenship as much from being born in the US as because one of their parents is an American citizen.

For your information...there is no such thing as "citizenship by marriage"! Citizenship by birth....yea...now that is correct, but marriage alone does NOT make you a citizen nor does it make you legal! There is a whole process of paper work, money orders, and interviews...not to mention the amount of time(often years) taken to complete this process. My husband and I married for love and have gone through a lot to make him legal and a citizen of the US. Next time...think...get facts...and then post something!!!

That's just dumb. Yes, it is abused but what about all the legitimate marriages? People who want to found a family and a home here? Or would you rather have more immigrants that come and then go back home to get married and bring their bride/groom back with them? That would be even MORE immigration then wouldn't it?
If it wasn't for some greed people wouldn't be motivated to work and set up buisnesses. Legal immigrants are some of the most outstanding citizens and pillars of society around!
My husband cannot get citizenship just by being married to me!

I was duped by a foreign husband for citizenship. Over the past five years, I found out I was one of way too many men and women that were used.
I've also met Americans that were willing to help or be paid by foreigners to get them here.
Yes, it should be ended. Or at least curtailed by a much, much longer waiting period. And, no, Ms. Tunisia, it's not that hard. Many have done it and continue to do it with no more than some joint bank statements and a couple of quickie interviews. I've done the research to prove just that.
With an overwhelmed and incompetent immigration system, our legal immigration system has proven to be just as bad as our illegal immigration problem. If you don't believe me, just log on to the site listed below ...

The US government estimated that about 50% of all marriages between US citizens and foreign citizens are fake and for the benefit of immigration only. They are cracking down and my guess is that the crackdown will get tougher.

Absolutely. It is also time to end citizenship by birth. If you are not born to legal U.S. citizens then you should not be considered one. The following steps should be required to become a citizen. 1. Be employed(no govt assistance w/o it), 2. Learn English, 3. Pass the citizenship test and last but certainly not least 4. BE AN AMERICAN!! You came here for a better life. I'm all for that. I do not approve of you waving your flag and bad mouthing this country. Don't try to turn this into your country of orgin. Go back to wherever you came if you are going to do that. Yes you can keep your traditions. Blend them w/ ours though.

Yes, it should be ended. Something else that should be ended is allowing the children of illegal immigrants to become citizens. Some people are allowed to use the resources that are supposed to be for citizens because the children they have here are citizens. They are legal residents of this country but their parents are not..
