JD has nailed it.
I Hate magpies, to a gamekeeper there a pet hate.
With out a doute they roost like moust birds, though the magpie will choose the deepes and darkest of woods ect.
On the othere hand i will give them some credit there great survivers and crafty beyond means.
During breeding season i tend to shoot the nests out to control there numbers (purley ligal).
Some of the land i have has villages near buy so i always check there nest first, I have had 3 gold rings over the years due to this, and the magpie having an eye for shiny things.
This year alone i have shot up to 100 at dusk on the edge of woods with a decoy owl on a pole

There in the UK as well as here in the U.S., Magpies are birds that sleep in a way called "viligent sleep".They roost like many other birds in tree's and building roofs, but their resting is intersperced with quick eye opening "peeks" that allow the Magpies to be ever sensative and aware of any disturbances in their immediate area. This ability allows the Magpies, rapid and many times unseen escape from preditors or potential dangers especially at night making little if any noise at all. They only roost in areas of total darkness which makes them that much more difficult to see or detect even when they are surprised or "flushed"....They are very hard birds to hunt at night. I can easily understand why you are having problems spotting them. Here in the U.S the Magpies and English Starlings are incredibly "filthy" birds that leave quite a mess behind....

To the best of my knowlege and belief, magpies, loke other birds, roost in trees at night. Is it legal to hunt birds at night in your area? Most places it is okay to hunt varmints at night but birds are not usually included in this group of varmints? Just curious?
