No, it isn't necessary. It's just a way of containing the powers raised, concentrating them to be released on a single goal.

No, not every time even though it does help with warding away evil. In my own home where I know I'm safe I don't bother with the cirlce, but if I were to go outside than I would as a precautin, especially if I were invoking other spirits.
Gnomes are the worse, and if any spell needs for you to call them for aid, it is better to be safe and invoke a circle than not. Let's just say my family and I have had baaaadd experinces with gnomes, and it wasn't because they were summoned.
Other times I will invoke a circle is if I am at work in the office and you know it's just one of those days. Since there isn't a lot of getting up and down its really easy to be inconpsicuos in forming it and unforming.

Gardner himself was confused about the difference between the magical circle (like Mathers) and the erecting the Temple rite, and that's one reason why the Gardnerian book of Shadows has at least two versions.
The "Magical Circle" protects you from evil and stuff like that, Wiccans really have no need of it. The Erecting the Temple rite prepares the area, oneself, and more for the presence of the divine.
I do do an erecting the Temple rite, but you would not recognize them all as "casting a circle."
Sorry I'm not more exact, but that's a question that depends on a lot of knowledge for a good answer.

In ceremonial magic the circle is primarily used as protection against outside forces. In Wicca, the circle is primarily used to designate sacred space and to contain energy while it is being focused.
While I do not always use a circle (generally when it's not convenient), I am more comfortable meditating within a circle. I've been able to cleanse and bless the area and close the area off from outside intrusion. I can focus better, and I think it is a more inviting place for my gods.

A circle is sacred space. You cast it for many reasons, protecting yourself from evil is kinda far down on the list.
You usually use it as a temporary church or sorts.
It can also be used to contain spell energy until the right time, etc.
You don't NEED a circle for everything.

It's to keep out negative energy and things that may distract you from the magick.
There is no such thing as evil.

I don't do circles. I don't purify the area. The earth is suffering and in pain, and circles protect you from this.
