Unless you are hunting in wet (snow or rain), or live in a very humid area, the finish doesn't matter. Stainless steel is most durable, and the gun won't have to be cleaned as often; but it costs more. Chrome is just a plating over the metal, stay away from it. Nickel is a cheaper metal, is pretty durable and resists the elements a little better than blued metal, but not as well as stainless steel. Blued steel is simply controlled oxidation of the steel; when the blue wears off, the gun can rust. Finally, go to a sporting goods store to purchase a firearm, don't buy one off the internet.

Nickel Vs Chrome Plating

To disagree with one answer, they don't make complete guns out of nickel or chrome. Chrome plating is hardly ever used on guns as it is too easy for it to get scratched if you are using the gun for hunting. The nickel answers have me wondering. Do they mean nickel plated or electroless nickel plated? Hardly anyone nickel plates guns any more. Electroless nickel plating is what they do now and the way to go when you want good protection from rain, sweat, or other damages. Stainlesss guns especially in the matte stainless finish are very good and I recommend them. But Stainless steel is a blend of iron, chrome, and other metals and the iron in a stainless gun will rust. Blued guns are the norm and I like them too. But even a blued gun will reflect light just not as much as a bright polished stainless gun. For hunting guns I like a dull polymer finish that looks like dark blue . For carry handguns I go bead blasted stainless. When I was a kid I wanted a bright shiny nickel plated gun but since I have grown older and wiser I now use guns that are correct for what I am doing rather than just flashy.

You've already received some pretty good answers especially from F C. I agree, stainless is the best as far as maintenance, wear and weather resistance is concerned. Nickel is pretty but be careful not to get any metal solvent on it. The solvent removes metal deposits (lead, copper, etc.) and it can't tell if the nickel plating is on the outside or inside of the barrel. I ruined the finish on a nickel plated Mauser once because I wasn't aware of this.

Chrome plating is the next best thing to stainless and you have your choice of finish: Bright shiny, beaded, matte, etc.

Good luck.

Nickel and Chrome look good but I prefer to keep things simple and easy....Blued is the way I go.

Galleryofguns.com I have never used. They are a little pricey

Nickel is typically shinier than Chrome. Nickel isn't as durable, and can peel off or crack easily. Chrome can be brushed or bead-blasted to get rid of the mirror shininess, if you'd rather have it like that. Blued is basicly causing the metal to form black rust, which is impact resistant, but not much harder than the metal that was blued. It's not going to provide as strong as a finish as chrome, but it will be nearly black. There's also parkerized finishes, they're more like a baked on enamel, and can be dull, and a good parkerized finish will often wear better than any blue job can. With parkerized finishes different colors can be chosen to further customize your firearm. Basically, look for something you like, but remember, Nickel looks pretty, and that's about it. It's not a finish you'd want on a gun for shooting, or one that's going to need to be relied upon.

As for galleryofguns.com, once you press the continue link, and enter your ZIP code, you'll get to choose who you want to purchase it from. They may or may not have one of those models in stock, but if they don't, it will be shipped to them for them to transfer to you. Unfortunately, I don't have enough experience with them to be sure of whether they're reliable or not, but if you're dealing with someone local it would help your chances of having a good transaction to visit the FFL first to make sure that they're an agreeable character.

For home defense you will want two tone or something visible so a possible intruder sees you have a means of defending your family, you and your stuff. Nickel and Chrome look very nice but they gotta stay clean to stay nice looking. I also read all of my cleaning supplies and most say do not use on nickel finishes or wood.

Other than that, personal preference.
