The Catholic Church is growing in Latin America and Africa. In contrast, Europe is quite secular. I don't understand why the Catholic Church has so many European cardinals when it has larger number of followers in the Third World. Don't u think there should be more non-European cardinals to reflect the church's universality?

I think the next Pope will come from the Third World.

Our current Pope, Benedict (God grant him peace and strength.), is a "transitional" pope.

The church's duty is to promote the Church, and open border is suppoose to provide that. It's not in our best intrest to placate the church which is why are founder believed in seperation of CHurch and State. I do respedct John Paul, but Benedict is a different story. Even if The Church has been beneificial now, doesn't mean it will always be that way. The changes in the Pope can dramatically change how the CHurch behave. AS for the legal advice that the Church gives and the support they give to illeal immigrants. According to our laws, if the church interfers with our government, they needd to pay taxes.

You are assuming the Church functions like a Democracy, and that the body of Cardinals MUST reflect the ethnic percentage of the world's Catholics. That's not how it works.

Well-said, Granny Annie.

What is with this obsession about "European" popes and cardinals? So much ado about so little.

Take a gander at this list of cardinals by nationality. It does seem to reflect universality ... oh, but your objection must be to Italian cardinals? They amount to but 14% of the current College of Cardinals.

Cheese whiz! Where you been for the last forty years?

More than half the current College of Cardinals have their seats OUTSIDE Europe. Shucky darn, honey. We even got one here in Texas! AND he's a native Texan!

Get out from under that rock and start paying attention to something other than your prejudices.

YES, YOU ARE RIGHT, MAYBE THE CHURCH COULD OPEN MORE THEIR MINDS TO THE NEW REALITY OF THE WORLD IF THEY INCLUDE CARDINALS FROM THE WHOLE WORLD.
