It is 100% true. If there were no Chase, Jeff Gordon would be one championship away from tying the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Richard Petty for most championships. In 2004, Kurt Busch won, because of the Chase, and under the old points system, Gordon would have been like 60 some points ahead of him. Also this year, the new Chase Format was even stupider. Gordon was leading the points for the first 26 races, and then Johnson gets seeded ahead of him because of the number of wins, and it was like a 20 point deficit. Gordon had no bonus for leading the points after the first 26 races, and yet he still lead the points for most of the Chase, and then with 3 races to go, Johnson takes over the points lead, and never looks back, and wins 4 in a row, for a total of 10 wins this season. That is just unbelievable. Gordon under the old points and no Chase, would have been like 375 or more points ahead of Johnson and would have had the championship locked in and won with like 4 races to go. I dont see how he can't be angry. Gordon said during the Awards banquet last night that he was a huge fan of the Chase even though it has robbed him of two championships. I dont see how he cant be upset about that. Both were rightfully his, and I know that everyone knew the rules going into the season and the Chase, but who would have thought that it would have robbed him by like 375 points or more? I would have never thought. In my book he has 6 championships, regardless of what the record books show.

Not sure about 2004, but if there was no chase format, Jeff Gordon would have had the title wrapped up shortly after when the chase started.

Robert G: No, Jeff was NOT whining when Kenseth won that year. As a matter of fact......not many of the drivers were whining at all. It was a select few "so called" NASCAR fans and the media who labeled the season and Kenseth as "boring." Had they actually polled the fans and drivers, the Chase would have been voted down.
Yes, Gordon would have won in both 2004 and 2007.

Not true. Listen, if the chase format was not created he would have lost in a wider margin of points since right when the chase starts they seperate the top 12 drivers by 5 points each.

Indeed.
*Note to self* - w/ Jimmie Johnson winning back to back championships.. Gordon really is already a 6 time champion.. (4 driver championships, and 2 owner championships)

It's true.
Get rid of The Chase!
Gordon would have been gunning for that 7th title next year. Oh well. He's still fully capable of winning championships.

Yes, and if Jeff had clinched the championship after Dover, the ratings on television would have dropped much lower than 4% and the ticket sales for the rest of the season would have tanked.
