My boyfriend is going in around August, I believe. He said he was going to be doing something with chemicals. I just wanted to know if there was any position in the army where you don't wield a gun or do anything too dangerous? And is 2 years the minimal time they have to be gone?

It sounds like he will be in NBC which is basically a glorified gas mask supplier. If that is the case, he will be fine.

The majority of soldiers, even in a combat zone, never come under direct fire. However, every soldier lives a more dangerous life than most any civilian.

The military today has a total of an 8 year obligation, though normally only 3 years on active duty. And that would include up to a year of training before even being assigned to an Permanent Party Unit.

Everyone in the Army is a rifleman. We are all tained to use them and we all carry one on deployments.

The deployment length has changed throughout the present conflict, at the moment Active Duty units are doing 15 months. Reserve units are doing 12. It was the other way around about a year ago. While one unit, 1st Brigade 34td Infantry (MN National Guard), did get extended to 22 months total, that's the exception. No one has done two years.

THe miltiary does dangerous things, but statistically, right now it's safer for a military member in Iraq than it was to be in peacetime training 12 years ago.

What r-u- talking about here u do not make clear what field he is going in that involves chemicals at all n yes! there are positions in the military were u do not need to carry a sidearm on ur person.
And as for this two year minimal time they have to be gone once again what r-u- talking about gone were u do not even say what branch of the military he is joining and that is what it is the military not the boy scouts were u do not want him to do anything too dangerous get real here OK!he can be sent anywhere the military deems necessary n it has nothing to do with what u do not want it all has to do with what the military needs n if his expertise sends him into harms way well there is really nothing u can do about it so u need to understand that right now.
So come back to reality OK n get out of this fantasy u want for him so u will feel comfortable about him leaving he can stay there as long as he is ordered n be held over for n extension as is what is going on now in Iraq, right now this is what the military is about n if I did not tell u I served as well.

He'll have to be a soldier. If he wants a job where he doesn't have to take up arms he should look into the Air force or the Navy.
I think the minimum enlistment is 2 years, but it could be 3. He won't necessarily be gone for 2 years straight, though. He can come home on leave, and you can go see him as long as he's not deployed.

There are many jobs in the military that are not carrying a gun. I was in the military for years and the only time I carried a gun was in navy boot camp.

Most jobs do envolve danger one way or the other, especially during war. I was on an engineer Submarines.

Sorry, the Army is not the Peace Corps. Only job where you dont carry a gun is Chaplain. Is your boyfriend an ordained minister or Rabbi?

The only job that does not require one to carry a weapon while deployed with the army is that of the chaplain, in fact it is forbidden by international law. That is why they have chaplain's assistance to help them carry out their duties as well as protecting them.

If you're deployed, you have to carry a weapon, whether or not you have any chance of firing it. Where did you get two years? The current deployment cycle is fifteen months for the Army.
