I've been thinking about going. But I don't really know what to expect. Please tell me what you think about it if you have been there, or even if you haven't.

Come on down and see for yourself, but please, don't just go to Sydney like so many tourists do. Get away from the east coast and see Ayers Rock, Kakadu, The Kimberley, the beaches of Esperance, the open spaces that characterize the country. It's all worth seeing, and it's a lot more spectacular than Bondi Beach (possibly the worst beach in Australia) or inner city Sydney will ever be.
Having said that, I've known a lot of people who came to Australia, thinking Sydney was all that was worth visiting, and had a great time. Perhaps they didn't know what they were missing though.
If you do the grand tour of the country, expect wide open spaces, and sometimes quite long distances between towns and fuel stops. People in Australia are quite direct, and respect it in return. The further you go from cities the rougher and tougher the men and women get too, be ready for it, but appreciate it for what it is.
Perhaps the best part of Australia is the weather and beaches, however. Esperance in Western Australia has the 2 whitest beaches in the world, and they're beautiful. There's lots of other good beaches in the rest of the country though. The weather is usually good enough to match too.
In summer it's hot, humid and rainy in the North, but hot and dry in the more southerly parts. temperatures of up to 48 degrees Celsius can be expected. In winter in the north the sun shines and temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees C can be expected, but in the South it (hopefully) will be somewhat cold and rainy.
Some say Australia is something of a police state, and compared to many countries, it's true.Police have more power than in many western countries, but don't worry, it's generally a very safe country.
As for the idea of Australia being full of dangerous animals: it's true, but don't worry. If you follow certain rules, you'll be just fine (i.e don't walk in long grass in case of snakes, watch where you put your hands in case of spiders).
Try it out for yourself, and have a great time!

Yes, I have been there.

There are three things I would like to do before I die. Here they are ranked from most to least important.

I would like to visit my parents graves, they are on the East Coast while I am currently on the West Coast of the USA.

I would like to return to Australia where I would climb the harbor bridge and look at the city, and go to Ayers rock. I'd like to climb the rock too but it may not be allowed.

Finally I would like to meet up with some of the men I served with in Vietnam. Incidentally some of them were from Australia.

That's my endorsement for you. I can't guarantee you will like it but if you don't it's your problem not Australia's. The country is fantastic, the animals are like nowhere else on earth and the people, well the people may be equaled somewhere but I have never seen it in my travels.

Best wishes on a fabulous trip, wish I could go with you...

I live here. It's a great country. Come over and visit.

All the dingoes will love you for it.

Cheers.

(it might help if you tell us which country you are from. Yahoo!Answers has got users from all over the world. Saying "Have you ever been" doesn't tell us which "you" - that is - which country you are asking )
