Which of these two outlets would have better prices on meat, the butcher or the supermarket? Supermarket would be in reference to places like Loblaws, in Canada, and other supermarkets across the U.S.

Thanks,

In the UK, I would go to an independent butcher every time. I would ask them what they had on special offer/recommend and say I was on a budget. You might pay the same as as supermarket, but you would get better quality for your money and would be supporting a local shop against the bully-boy supermarket chains like Tesco. They only care about profit and not the community benefit of local shops and businesses. I don't know about out of the UK. You could also approach a farmer direct and ask if they can provide you with a butchered and portioned carcase which very often is a great bargain if you have freezer space. either way you will be supporting an independent supplier.

I would expect to pay More at a butcher shop.

They will usually have higher grade cuts of meat.

They will cut meat "to order" and will provide services that a grocery store cannot match.

A butcher is a professional craftsman. If you want to use his services, you should be prepared to reward him for his knowledge.

it simply does not work like you wish..
the size of your city MAY cater to your wish..
but I am sure talking to a "Butcher" he may adjust $$
where as a supermarket in a large city may use the volume of meat removed from the shelf as a deductible loss. and sell to a rendering plant may offer the highest price...
and fear law suits to discount meat day past the expected date .... Well??
