Active instead of passive means instead of writing:
The car was washed by the children in the garden
you write
The children washed the car in the garden
You keep the tense (past tense, future, present) but change the subject to the people or things doing the verb, not the people or things having the verb done to them.
Passive is a common construct in German, if you want to translate you will need to learn how to convert from passive to active as we write much less of it in English.
