Depends on the "nip". Was your dog being aggressive or was he 'warning' your child to stop annoying him? There is a HUGE difference.

ADD: I do agree with Greekman (for the most part- round 2?? haha) when he states that ANY type of nipping should not be tolerated, but I also believe that children should be taught how to appropriately treat and behave around dogs. You should see how some of the children yank, poke, bite (oh yes!), tug, and hit their dogs at my office. The parents just stand there, so I step in and open my mouth. Any kind of nipping is not acceptable around my house and my dogs damn well know they better not even play bite us, however, if a child is tormenting a dog I believe the parents need to step in and punish that child, as well.

ADD2: THAT is not acceptable. For one your dog should not be barking at your kids while playing, I would nip (no pun intended) that habit asap. Your dog was excited and wanted to play, however, you need to not allow the over-excitement get him so worked up where he bites. Although he does need to be neutered, this will not stop his excitment.

Depends - WAY too little info here.
If the dog nipped the child because he was trying to pick the dog up by the whiskers - the dog needs no training and will not likely bite another (unless the abuse is repeated) BUT the CHILD needs a spanking.
there are 101 other senerios some of which can indicate a dangerous dog in the making some others of which simply indicate a "no fault' on the part of the dog (I saw one person bitten accident by grabbing the frisbee the dog was leaping for to grab - dog couldn't turn away fast enough).
Try taking him to a good OB trainer or behaviorist. Give them a full tale and let them see the dog in a class situation to assess his temperment- often they have solutions.

Here is my opinion on this and I know everyone will disagree, but, oh well.. Once a dog nips at a child, regardless of the reason and fault, that dog is gone, instantly!!
My child is much more important then any dog will ever be and he is a child, he is bound to do things that may not please the dog.
I have had dogs for 30 years and I have two small children, they have been raised around dogs and show them the utmost respect and concern, however, one nip, one wrong look and the dog is history. I do not and cannot tolerate any aggression/biting from a dog to a child!!
Hope I helped!!

There's a good chance that the pup was scared by the kid or aroused by the running. You need to understand triggers, thresholds, counter conditioning and desensitization. Do not punish the dog if it growls around kids, it's giving a very clear signal that it needs the kid to be further away from him. You can punish a dog for growling and then one day a kid gets too close and the dog doesn't growl, it just bites.

You need to change how the dog feels about kids. You do this by creating positive associations with kids. The behavior could get worse, but if you catch it early and deal with it correctly can help your dog learn the appropriate behaviors around kids. Don't let kids near this dog, until you know how to work with it. The dog should not practice inappropriate behaviors.

I would try to train it out of the dog. A Chihuahua is so small that they are unlikely to inflict a dangerous bite but nipping is unacceptable and needs addressing. Seek advice from a Behaviourist - your vet should be able to put you in touch with one.

scold him whenever he does it, nip it in the butt now or you will have a bitter on your hands. In a loud voice say NO and slap your hands together. The dog is trying to dominate your kids as the pack leader.

I have 3 dogs that all did the same thing. some times it all depends on the dogs personality. My dogs grew out of it. what i did was tap them on the nose and say no firmly. don't tap too easy but not too hard, it will work!!

u should be able to train it. when it goes to nip with a stern voice tell it no and move it away from who ever it goes to nip then ignore it so it knows it has done bad. If he does good give him alot of praise and a treat.
