Cockatiels are pretty smart birds, but, I would have to saw a bigger bird, like a macaw, would be the smartest bird! Though, cockatiels aren't the best talkers, they are good at whistleing, entertaining you, and just making you laugh! On a scale of 1-10, I would say the cockatiel lies around 6-7, where as the macaw would lean towards 9-10! I hope that I helped! Thanks, and good luck with the new 'tiels! Thanks,

Cockatiels are pretty smart. i have two. They are not as smart as cockatwo*s but they are very intelligent. Maybe he is saying that, but you can't be sure. She is biting you know ,but maybe after you get to know the birds better and interact with them everyday they will be more comfortable around you. My male bird loves my mom, my sister, and myself he is gentle and likes to nibble on earrings. The female, i don't know what it is with women..lol, is only good with my sister. They can get feisty and sometimes bite if you don't play with them for awhile. Tell your mom to keep playing with them to form a relationship. They are great pets!
P.S. Try keeping eye contact with the bird and getting your hand near the feet they may jump on and be less afraid of your hand.

RE:
How smart are cockatiels?
My mom's friend just gave us 2 cockatiels a boy and a girl. The girl likes to try to bite you if you put your finger in the cage but the boy doesn't do that and when I do that the boy tries to bite her as if saying "hey don't do that they are our friends!"...I'm not the...

Oh,that's funny! No doubt the girl is afraid, that is why she probably is biting. When my 'Teil was just a little baby,he would try to bite, and I would distract him by saying-uh-uh-uh!and then I would put him back in the cage, and walk away.In your case, she is being territorial,so I think the best way is to not put your hand in the cage, but rather get her favorite food and entice her out,so that she still feels safe in her cage.A lovebird I adopted will make the sweetest clicking noise,it sounds like a 'come here' noise, and then he bites the crap out of you,so we learned to get him to want to come out slowly over time,in stages.Look up hand -training by Googling it,there are several other different ways to do this.

hi there, i had 3 different cockatiels different years.
One - was in love with my dad, honestly whenever he came to open the door, he screemed from far away knowing it was him... happy on his shoulder, my dad too nap with him and was amazing one and died we all cried...
then bought a female... blond. oh boy what a moody one. only loved my mum putting her in the cage to smooth. To me? she hated me. she did like 'ghhhhhhh'' whenever she saw me. I think may be she knew i wasn't in love with her as much as i was with the first one.It was male the first.
3rd was very old, and really sad when first day came to our house, he died.
So all birds have different personalities like humans. You can't imagine what and how they will react until you learn. Try to be nice to her, may be she'll get used to you?
