Help with organizing my computer desktop files?

I have a MacBook. Periodically I save my files on a memory stick. However I find it difficult to avoid duplicating files I've already saved, and I'm always loath to delete old files in case they're gone for ever. Anyone got a good system that works for them?

OK I know the Mac has got Spotlight which is great...

Use the Backup utility included with your .Mac Trial account.

If it's expired already, just get a USB or Firewire external hard drive.
