What were your experiences? I was in the Army. And basic training wasn't all that bad. I fell off a tower while climbing it. Broke my wrist. A big black drill Sgt came running over and before he asked me if I was alright. He said in a deep Southern drawl. Damn I wish I had my camera. :) Fearing him more then my broken wrist I jumped up and said I was ok.

Your right about that Tom. My main drill Sgt was Sgt. Nava or was it Nova? Damn I still get it wrong. Front leaning position soldier. :) For some reason I kept calling him Nova. But he knew my name well.

Navy Boot Camp-Bainbridge, Maryland, 1957. Then twice through Marine Infantry training at Field Medical School in Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton. Somehow I survived all three. The worst may have been the one at Camp Pendleton. Our Marine drill instructor was a tough Gunnery Sergeant from Hawaii who was on restricted duty because of bilateral hearing loss and was wearing hearing aids in both ears. When he asked for us to yell a response and he answered: "I can't hear you people!", sometimes it really was the truth. LOL!

As was i served in the Army.n went through boot camp at Fort Dix,New Jersey, which is also my home state n I went through just as the Vietnam war came to and end n during the Winter,n believe me it was cold as held out there during Bivwac n-u should no what I am talking about there.
I enjoyed it had a lot of fun learned a lot of things I also grew up and I met n made some very good friends as well.
I have no regrets in joining n if I could do it all over again I would but let me go one further with u besides the Army,I also served in the Navy,n had to o through there boot camp as well at Great Lakes,Illinois,n once again during the Winter months as well n yes! I got real sick again but u know what I made it through because only the strong survive and this is were the separate the men from the boys per say.
My drill Sergent depending on how old u-r- if u ever watched TV land n the Flip Wilson,Show my drill Sgt,looked exactly like him that we thought when we first met him was him he could have been his identical twin but putting that aside I do not regret any of it at all and I am proud that I did.

Navy boot camp, San Diego, 1960.

13 weeks of getting used to the Navy. Nothing tough... physically or mentally. But I had a college degree and had lettered in swimming my last two years. Don't recall that much running... certainly not as much as they seem to stress it today.

I learned that no matter how hard you try to be the best, there's always somebody better.

Remember the first week or so washing our clothes by hand with scrub brushes and watching the Marines and being glad I didn't go that route.

No. The Navy wants sailors to get along with each other. If any sailor seriously disables another sailor the entire ship is hurt. The Navy takes very seriously the UCMJ concerning no two sailors can ever strike each other. If someone hits you, and if you hit back then in the Navy, both of you are going to be fined. Other branches train men to fight. They encourage fighting. And they see a lot of fighting among their men. If you have a grief then go fight each other. But in the Navy, we don't want men to fight each other, so it is discouraged. If you get upset, or frustrated, and start swinging at others, in the Navy, you will go to NJP.

I went to BCT during the summer of 06, I had no clue what to expect, but everything turned out fine... I faced my fears of weapons ( had never seen one in person), kicked butt on the Range ( Got a 34 my very 1st try), sprang my ankle during our 7 day Field problem, but didnt find out until I return from AIT and went to see my PCM and then Ortho I actually tore my tendon I had to wear a cast for 2 1/2 months...overall BCT wasnt bad.

Boot camps have become soft in the last five years. The worst one any more is Navy boot camp in the winter. Negative 40 degrees sucks while marching to morning meal.

I did basic training in the Army 20 years ago in Fort Knox. It was one of the best times of my life. I was challenged there more than anywhere ever. It is most responsible for helping me become a man.

My hubby is USAF. He said it wasn't that hard in basic. The physical training part was exhausting, but he didn't mind the TI's so much. He said if you just shut up and do what you're told, and remember that they will take every opportunity to humiliate you, then you're fine.
