This paasage means that when Jesus returns, people will not pay attention to the warning signs just like in Noah's day. Noah sounded the warning but only his family listened. Similiarly today, the signs have been given at Mt 24:4-14. If people do not listen and change their current status they will not be alive for the new world( Peter 3:13). Jesus will come unexpectedly for the masses, that's why its says like a thief in the night. We need to prepare ourselves now because Jesus is coming soon.

I have broken down many of the passage that shows us the end time events. This how I see this passage:
Matthew 2437But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 40Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 41Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 42Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. 43But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. 44Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
Look at the how this is written…for as in those DAYS…
It wasn’t just a last minute decision… Noah tried to warn people; he believed God would save (kept from God’s wrath) anyone who wanted to be saved from the flood, that the flood (wrath) would come, he prepared, waited and watched, he was diligent. This also illustrates how few will make it to the marriage ceremony. I believe there is a separation between the Bride and the Tribulation Saints. Many people have heard of the “rapture” but they just won’t acknowledge the warning! Or the GIFT! As in Noah’s day…many mockers, the children of disobedience all waking according to there own wants. When the flood came, Noah didn’t hear or see any of it…God protected him and his family in the ark… I believe when the wrath of God comes down to earth only the” children of disobedience” will face it. I believe the Bride’s chamber is to the Christian as the Ark was to Noah.
Jude 1:18
How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.
Who will witness the wrath?
Revelation 14:10The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb.
Christians will not witness the wrath.

In addition to pointing out no one knows EXACTLY when God will order the destruction of this wicked system, it also points out the fallibly of the trinity. Jesus said plainly he doesn't know when it will happen, only his Father knows. Clearly this is not a case of the right hand not knowing what the left is up to, but shows they are separate individuals.
Prior to this 37th verse, is a list of indicators so we would know the time was near. All these things have gone on for centuries. The difference is the scale. On a scale, volume, pace that has not yet existed.

The intent of this passage is for us to see the need to be ready for Jesus to come again. We should not put off growing closer to Him. His second coming will be at a time we do not expect. At that time, there is no second chance. Believers go to heaven, non-believers do not.
