You've pretty much answered your own question.
If YOU had a daughter with this man, would you want her to devote her life to cleaning up his mistakes? Then be as kind to yourself.
Help - if you don't have supportive family or friends, look online for a support group. If you had abuse or alcoholism in your family, these may be contributing factors to picking losers. Look up support groups for these. Even here. But don't get dragged under. Move if you need to, get a new life, take a class or few in college. Allow yourself to have a decent life. You deserve it.

if the person is in and out of jail all the time he could be a waste of time but keep in mind any one can go to jail, just a simple mistake or not thinking,a car accident where you kill someone, these things should not happen but they do, only you truly know in your own heart

It is sad. I've seen it countless times. A seemingly intelligent, well mannered female that sticks by their dope addicted, burglarizing, violent, robbing piece of crap boyfriend or husband.
You owe him nothing. He made a conscious decision to choose crime over you. He apparently did not consider you or the outcome his actions may have on you.
You and all other people (men included), owe it to themselves to get out of these destructive relationships and have a good, prosperous life. You have zero chance with him.
Your significant other looked out for #1, now its your turn.

No.
Let me rephrase that:
No, no, no, no, no, and for-goodness'-sake no!
I do not see you as 'pathetic' for trying to help someone you love.
Unless he was there for assaulting you or something like that.
The vast majority of people arrested for anything nowadays are nowhere near guilty of anything, and are being arrested simply to make sure people see the police as doing something, instead of simply investigating, which most ignoramuses perceive as not doing anything.
Take a look in that case in Aruba: Even though there has been a non-stop task force of some unknown-to-me size working on the missing woman's case ever since the get-go, there has been so much public outrage over them not being perceived as doing anything that in order to appease the ignorant press and public, they've been arresting and releasign and re-arresting and re-releasing the same three "suspects", without anywhere near enough evidence for any of their judges to believe to merit a trial, and in two of their cases, have always had so little evidence that they wind up being thrown out of court.
Sure, that missing woman's family is hurting and would like to see some justice, but, so would the families and loved ones of the repeatedly accused and arrested 'suspects' as well.
I have always advised my daughters to do whatever they can to give their loved ones the benefit of the doubt until there is absolutely zero doubt, and even on death row, there is quite often so much doubt, that THAT's where it's pathetic.
Who says you're an idiot with low self-esteem? Whoever it is, is not someone who cares about you.
Anbody who can even begin to claim that they love somebody is someone whose concern for another's health, happiness, welfare, and safety is equal to or greater than their own.
You sound to me like you are one of the FEW people in this world who can make that kind of claim. Anybody trying to put you down for having that kind of love in your life, is someone who is obviously jealous of your love, or perhaps, is jealous of the object of your love, and is trying to dissuade you from loving him, so you can love them.

depends on why he's in jail. if he's a rotten person and will never be reformed, then it's pathetic. if it was a one time mistake and will never be repeated, then support him. but don't go into debt or ruin your life for him. you have to decide if he's worth it all or not. step back and pretend it's someone else in this situation. what would you tell them?

If you love him, and believe in his innocence or that he'll knock whatever it was off when he gets out of prison, I don't think that's pathetic. If he's a career criminal, best to give up on him.

My biggest concern is, why does it matter to you what outsiders think?
What I mean is, if it is burning in the back of your mind, perhaps your survival instinct is kicking in sending you a warning notice, and you may benefit from some counseling.
I wish you well.
