Because God commands it, and Jesus said, "If you love me you will keep my commandments." I know lots of people who go to church, but really very very few think they are better than anyone else.

yes i agree, it is called the sin of pride. i see many catholics and baptists that are so proud in their hearts, i wonder where they get "their" spirit from.
definitely the bible says Do not forsake the gathering of saints.
but if the spirit that resides in church is EVIL it is better not to go to church at all.
if the spirit that gets them "high" is a narcotic rather than the spirit which comes from above then it is most likely the spirit of sorcery, a power that is made by the hands of men, not by the will of God.
it is a deception the western world has fallen prey to since all the apostles were killed.
therefore it is written, there will be many that call Jesus "lord" but it is their lips not their hearts that do so.
i love God and righteousness, and i have loved the gathering of the saints more than my own family. but in the pride of their ways i have seen the church of babylon, not the kingdom of God.
if you truly have the spirit of God you might be able to discern the spirit of sorcery when you enter the temples and synagogues and chappels. i think they are ALL polluted with sorceries and witchcrafts. anymore. if you truly have the spirit of God, try building your own alter and See for yourself if the spirit of God will come and visit you. and then ask the spirit which church to join for yourself.

It is not the building made by hands that God dwells in, but the heart made of flesh. The church is but to give you rest from surrounding sin and to encourage you through brothers and sisters in christ. If you are not getting that there, I suggest you find a new church.

When you worship God in a setting with people who have the same line of thought, it is encouraging and upbuilding. Many people have the same struggles as we do and seeing them do their best despite the odds makes us push that much more. Please read Hebrews 10:23,24 for the scriptural answer. Find the right religion and worship God with people who live by the Bible and love him.

I once heard it said that:
"Going to church every Sunday will no more make you a good Christian than sitting in a hen house every Sunday will make you a good chicken."

Some people are holier than thous no matter what the excuse. This is just one excuse for them to believe that they are better than everyone else. You should not take the reasoning as anything more than just their excuse of the day.

I go to church to worship God and to be with other Christan's. There are some people who act like they are better but it is best to let God deal with them. you will go to heaven if you have accepted Jesus in your heart.

I go to church to learn, to fellowship, to minister and to serve. As I reckoned myself crucified in Christ His life in me will reach out through me to touch others and bless them. We are saved to fellowship with God and with His other children and church is a good place to do that. God bless you.

If this question is from a believer, it is a good question. If it is from an atheist, it is in bad taste.
