I agree with Disco24. It's not the sandwich that is seen as bad, it's what they KNOW most people will lay between those two slices and the two slices themselves.

A wonderfully healthy sandwich can be built, if it's a REAL Complex carb bread like 12 or 9 grain. Trouble with a lot of bread manufactured is that while the wrapper touts whole grain (caramel coloring) is mostly what's in it and refined flours and sugars, which are no no's.
Americans are reading more labels, but not enough know what to look for. Always look for real unrefined grains and whole flours in place of all purpose flour used, look for good fats used in processing instead of coconut oils and the like, look for the lower sugar content.
Buy breads with good grains, nuts and seeds and build that sandwich with lean low fat meats or fish, and drag it through the garden, using good crispy healthy veggies to top it and hold the may for a good whole grain mustard and you DO have a good sandwich.

I say the makeup of whats in the bread versus what you put on them. I am on a low sodium diet and everything has lost of sodium in it. I am feeling like there is no way for me to eat what I like and be healthy. There are ways...you just have to do your research and find what kind of bread to use and what you can put in between them!

well if you use wheat or rye bread it is pretty healthy, skip the cheese, use lettuce and tomato and a lowfat mayo or yellow mustard and you are good to go..... Turkey is a healthy alternative to ham.....
